By REX BEACH. (Cop.vrlrht, IBS,!, by the Awrlatefl Pres.) FAIRBANKS, Alaska. Aug. t7. Alaska la stunned by the catastro phe at Point Barrow. It feels the disaster more keenly because It haa for the last wee played host to Will Rogers and Wiley Post and had Just become personally acquainted with both men. Today there are no smile, up hero, Thla Is the blackest day Alaska ha known. When the newa of the crash la the ohm fog of the Arctic tundra. waa made known yesterday the en tire population of the territory was stricken dumb. I have never seen ft people so completely atunned. We know no more about the details than you know as yet for the U. a. signal corps which afford he only radio communication In the north, there being no telegraph or cable, haa broadcast to the world' all then Is to know. Will and Wiley started for Pourt .Barrow, ran Into a fog, were forced to land and ascertain from natives their whereabouts. When they too off the engine misfired and the ship nosed Into a death dive. The account la almost aa short, as stark, as allock ing as the tragedy Itself. But Alaskans were at flrat Incredu lous thla thing might happen to other filers, aald they but not to Wiley and Will, Then as the mes sages continued to come In, Alaau bowed her head and wept. "Weather did It," the old-timers say. They ahake their heads and assent "Point Barrow and those Arctic bar rens aren't Alaska they're 1400 miles north and the climate is tricky. Will and Wiley should have been careful." But Wiley was careful, Win told ma In Juneau that he was the most careful pilot he had ever flown with, almost too careful It seemed to win. And he was skillful, too. Amelia Earhart had told Will that she con sidered Post the finest filer alive. What actually went wrong 50 rest above that shallow tundra river may never be known. But this much Is absolutely certain In the minds ot every alr-mlnded Alaakan ... It was too much for humans to cops with. federOdfor I! SALEM, Ore., Aug. 17.
