ROSE CITY REM MEET, AUG. 5-10 PORTLAND. Ore.. July 30 (API Preparations were being speeded here today for the annual convention of the American pharmaceutical associa tion here August 5 to 10. Dr. Robert p. Flschella of Trenton. N. J., and others are already here to take an active part In the first con vention the association ever has held In the Pacific northwest. Many scientists and research work ers In foreign countries are members of the organization which la devoted primarily to the advancement of pro fessional pharmacy. The Copeland pure food and drug law now before congress, and much other national and state legislation affecting the public health has been espoused by the' association. PORTLAND PIANT REFUSES 10 IE PORTLAND, Ore., July 30. (AP) Lumber operations In Portland ap proached normalcy today with lull crews working at a number of mills and with others scheduled to be operating full" blast by the end oi the week. Only one of the nine mills here has failed to resume operation since start of the strike May 6 by the Sawmill and Timber Workers' union. All but one which resumed opera tions did so under settlement with the union. The Eastern te Western company officials declared they are willing to make settlement, but will not re hire workers who took part in "radi cal" acts during the strike. Wage Increases averaging five cents an hour making a minimum of 6U cents an hour, collective bargaining and continuance of the 40-hour week were settlement terms. In the holdup of a druf? store In a residential section here today and then escaped In an auto mobile police said wan stolen. Phillips was alone In the store when the man entered. Scattered coins on the floor and disarranged merchandise Indicated the clerk struggled with the Intruder, even after a pistol slug struck him In the chest. July 30 Three men were killed and seven In jured today by the fall of a heavy derrick at the base of Twin Falls in the Snake river canyon, seven mllos northeast of here, where the Idaho Power company Is constructing a million-dollar plant. The dead are: Fred RAbcr. Twin Falls; F. E. Hawk.es, Shoshone. Ida., and J. A. Andersen, Hagerman. Ida., an employe of the Idaho Power com pany for several years. A big derrick used for moving ma terials and machinery up and down the canyon wall toppled and crashed almost without warning. The cause was undetermined. SCOIT URGED FOR ALUMNI POST CORVALLIS. O.), hoped to get the measure up on the floor tomorrow. He said that If he failed It would be taken up "Thurs day at the latest." "I hope we can get It passed by Saturday," Doughton added. FROM STATE MEET Postmaster Prank DeSouza, who represented Medford fit the recent an nual convention at Coqullle of the Poatmaaters' association of Oregon, haa returned to Medford with the honor of having been elected flrat vice-president. The Postmasters' association, com prised of postmasters from first and second class pos toff ices, met preced ing a two-day session of postmaster from third and fourth class offices, forming the District League of Post masters of Oregon. Postmaster DeSouza stated that the convention was voted the most suc cessful ever held In Oregon, both from a standpoint of attendance, which totaled approximately 100, and addresses by noted speakers. He said the outstanding feature was a talk given by Harrison Parkman, purchas ing agent of the pos toff Ice depart ment, Washington, D. C.. who repre sented Postmaster General James A. Farley Trips, a banquet and entertainment programs combined to make a very enjoyable meeting. Postmaster De Souza said. Grants Pass was chosen as next year's convention city. Harpers to Leave for Idaho Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Harper and daughters Elmeda and Edna will leave by motor Saturday for Twin Palls, Ida., to spend two weeks visiting Mrs. Har per's mother, Mrs. Whitney.
