SBSifTiSiifi nrwrrirt-i I lyirrfn- t" ADDS NEW TYPE the Increased demand lor Meadow Brook Grade A raw milk and cream has made more efficient delivery eauiDment necessary, and the pur chase of a Dodge commercial car wit a Medford made Mann custom built body, by Warner and Young, the own ers, has placed the most modern and sanitary equipment available on their delivery route, according to L. C. Tay- I lor, sales manager for the Pierce Allen Motor Co., Dodge and Plymouth dealers. Meadowbrook milk is produced ' from Warner and Young's own herd of carefully selected cows which have passed all tests required under fed eral, state and city Inspection. Milk from this herd has been entered at the Pacific International Dairy Pro ducts show and the Oregon State fair and it has won silver medal awards with scores above 97 per cent the last three years In the Medowbrook herd there are many pure bred registered Jersey cows with enviable show ring records. For the production of the highest quality raw milk, this herd ia cared for In one of the most modern and sanitary dairy barns in southern Oregon. All feeding is under the personal supervision of Mr. Young, a dairyman with years of experience In the hand ling of high grade cows. Painstaking care is essential to Insure the highest quality milk and cream, according to Mr. Young. The streamline body of the new de livery truck is cork Insulated and it la absolutely dust proof and dirt proof. It was designed and manufac tured by Mann's Auto Service, which is well known for the many attract ive truck bodies made in Medford for southern Oregon firms. BLUE LEDGE MINE TRIP SUGGESTED FOR SUNDAY The Mail Tribune today publisnps the third of a series of MiggMtpd short trips for motorists In the Medford region. Tn Mn" Tribune auto editor welcomes suggestions for Sunday excursions In this vicinity. Today's trip, which takes the autoist to the Blue Ledge mine, lollotts: The quiet, moulerlng decay of -a i ghost town, the thrill of an eagles view from a mountain pass down i into the smoky panorama of the i upper Applegate valley, one . of the I most beautiful spota in Oregon, and the thousand sweet smells on the night air, awaits the adventurous family willing to devote a Sunday afternoon to a drive to Joe Barr and the Blue Ledge mine. Of all the beautiful drives In southern Oregon, this Is one 'of the best, and also one of the least known. By taking the Applegate highway out of Jacksonville, and continuing up stream past Ruch to the Star ranger station, the. way Is easy. The road la smooth and the curves are gradual enough, at least for several miles. Follow the road past Star to the next covered bridge, crossing the river to the left side, looking up stream. The road follows on through the village of Copper, and has recently been regraded by the Civilian Con servation Corps, to the Hutton ranger station. A little care in following signs takea the family across Elliott creek and Into Joe Barr, a deserted village of dilapidated buildings, the old ghost town which had its hey dey when the Blue Ledge mine. perched like an eagles' nest on a mountain ledge, about five miles above, was running full blast. A twisting mountain road leads away from Joe Barr up to the mine, and although steep It is smooth and easily negotiable. It is not, however. advisable for an Inexperienced driver to make the climb. At many points there Is a sheer drop of hundreds of feet, but to those of stout heart the reward Is a rich one. It is Impossible to drive clear to the Blue Ledge, but the road crosses Merchants of Raleigh, N. C, re cently contributed 9300 to buy poison for ridding the town of rats. some of the old mine buildings, In full view of the Interesting scene above. To those who have never been to the spot, there is no way to pre pare them for the experience. AU the visions of castles in Spain, mon asteries perched on Alpine cliffs and the mast elaborate of weird movie thriller sets are conjured up by the picture. There is water here, but no par ticularly good place to picnic? How ever, if the trip is so planned that the stop at this summit Is made Just at dusk, the picture is complete. One can see for miles and miles out over the beautiful valley below, with the Applegate river twisting and twinkl ing in the distance. At dusk all the mountain aim?! is creep out of hiding and lend an enchantment that will make one forget the worries of every day, prosaic existence. If the party is to be an all-day affair, a fine diversion Is to picnic at the first covered bridge past Star. The kids can take the car, cross the bridge, and go downstream about a mile or more to one of the best swimming spots on the river. The swimming hole Is not easily acces sible, but Is of such excellence that a little effort expended will soon be forgotten. The best way to find the spot is to look for a pipe line which crosses the river in centllever style, like a swinging bridge. The swimming spot is up stream about 100 feet irom this, but la reached only by wading down stream about 100 yards from a gradually shelving beach which can be seen from the road above. The water here Is clean and cool, and rocks from which to dive are handy for the older kids, while ( fine pool is available for the youngs ters. The trip from Medford to the the mountain divide, at the site ox mine and return Is about 80 miles. New 1936 Nash4009 Is Described As "Revolutionary" Nah Invades a new price field with the new 1938 "400" series a car de scribed .is revolutionary in design and construction to sell In the lower middle price bracket. The new cars are now on display In the salesroom of Walter W. Abbey. Inc. With the announcement of its new "400" series, an addition to the com pany's present line of cars, Nash also introduces the first "Monitor Sealed Motor," perhaps the most compact, simplest and most cleanly designed engine ever used to power a pro duction automobile. Simplification of engine design has long been a topic for discussion among automotive engineers, and the Nash Motors company has taken def inite steps in this direction by de veloping a power plant that may exert a tremendous Influence on future automotive design., Hundreds of previously essential parts have been eliminated In the new motor's construction. Including all exterior manifolding; and because the outside of the engine is so free from gadgets and miscellaneous fit tings, all operating parts are ea&lly and quickly accessible. This, it is claimed, greatly reduces engine main tenance costs. Valve grinding, as an example, can be accomplished In far less time than that formerly neces sary. Backing up Nash's claim for revo lutionary Improvements, the 400" Is the first car to make hood lifting unnecessary at wrvlco stations, both oil and water being quickly added through a convenient "service door' formed by the hinged radiator ornament. In 1934 nearly half of all the per sons killed in automobile accidents were pedestrians, It Is shown by the annual figures compiled 1y the Travelers Insurance Company. The total number of pedestrians killed was 15,950, while nearly 270,000 pedestrians were Injured. Five out ot every eight pedes trians killed, It Is shown, were In volved In accidents while crossing streets In the middle ot the block, crossing Intersections against sig nals or diagonally, darting out Into streets from behind parked cars, or while walking along rural highways. It has been pointed out that pedes trians run across streets In the mid dle of the block or against signals because many feel that little if any more protection Is given them at properly designated crosswalks or when they wait for signals. Many pedestrians know that It Is danger oub to walk along rural highways, but since paths or walks have not Coming from behind car 9 Miscellaneous 29 been provided, the question often Is raised, "what else can pedestrians do along rural highways?" Of course It Is good advice to walk facing traf fic. Pedestrians may well pause to consider the fact that In 1934 the rate of death per pedestrian acci dent was 45 per cent worse crossing In the middle of the block than at Intersections, and was 74 per cent worse crossing against signals than with signals. At the same time, how ever, the driver Is warned to "be tolerant with the podestrlan, since the latter's faults are not crimes punishable by death." bers to that board today.
