Egbert was the whale which made Us appearance In the Willamette river, 100 miles from the aea, early In 1032. Thousands watched him stir up whalUh waves. Later on other thousands, at a dime each, got a eloseup view of his (or her) re mains. Circuit Judge Hay today ruled the remains belong to Oregon and that Edward O. and Joseph T. Lessnrd. who awertedly harpooned Egbert and put him In a showcase, must pro dure the body or $1000. The whereabouts of "Moby Mary." or Egbert, ls unknown. What the state would do with Its body. If It appears, also ls unknown. The next step ls tip to the Lesserds. Anyway, it appears that Oregon ls to be richer state either by $1000 or one dead whale. In Its replevin action to harpoon either the whale's car cass or "one grnnd." the state cited an old English law of the Year of Our Lord , 1 324. when the English parliament turned over to the crown all whales found within the three mile limit. . Since the whale was killed in Oregon waters. It wss property or the slate In absence of the crown, the state contended. NATURAL PERMANENT WAVE .00 Including Shampoo Finger e and Shaping . Friday, he asserts, but a ran sacking of the town revealed no trace of the noted lady evangelist. She flew through Medford Tues day, met Wednesday In Portland with Four Sqtiare Oospcl leaders and then presumably left enroute back to Sou Francisco. She evidently arrived here Friday, although a. check with local United Airlines officials disclosed that she did not arrive by plane, for Boothby will sincerely Insist that In she walked, bought some fruit nd chatted with him. She did not disclose her Identity voluntarily, but stated simply when asked, that she was Almee Semple McPherson. The clerk will relate to anyone who Is Interested that she Inquired about the purchase of some tomatoes. When shown some of the round red fruit she desisted from buying, pointing out to the clerk that the tomatoes were bad. "I know they're bad." parried the store man, innocently, "and we're Just waiting for a preacher to come so that we can bury them." Perhaps I'll do," quoth "Almee," "I'm a preacher." It was then that the clerk asked If he might ask her name, and she told 1 him. He swallowed his surprise and continued waiting upon his noted customer, who assured him repeated ly that she was "not kidding." "How long are you going to be In Medford?" was the natural question that Boothby managed to slip In. "That depends upon what kind of weather we have," smiled "Almee," as she gathered up her packages and stepped out Into the sunshine. MEDFORD Vacation Headquarters for Southern Oregon s Wonderland Our 1935 tourist season is now in full swing, following the open ing last month of the road to Crater Lake National Park. And Medford, central city in Southern Oregon's vacation wonderland, extends its welcome to the annual influx of summer visitors. No city in the western United States offers more scenic beauty and recreational opportunities within the territory that sur rounds it. Crater Lake, the Medford National Bank IN COURT DRESS ' a. A Whether It was really Almee or someone posing tn her place ls a question that will promote consider able discussion If asked In the prox imity of the grocery clerk. Whether or not she ls still here. If Indeed she Is Almee. Is a question that also gives rise to considerable discussion. Some think that she Is taking a brief vacation here, possibly a secret guest at some summer lodge along the Rogue, and others contend that she was probably Just motor'ng south, logically buying some fruit here before continuing on her way. Although she hns denied all rumors that she Intends to wed. seme even venture to suggest that she Is tarry ing In southern Oregon for a secret romantic interest. O. A. R.
