SAFETY ON THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE pptfi. A zelle you will find a wonderful dirt road and all of the mountain roads are wide and well graded. The business men of Medford should be Interested in making this trip and they will understand why they have had such a wonderful pat ronage from that section. The people there are thrifty. Their farms are well kept and their large farm houses are painted with well-kept lawns, etc. For those who desire to make a day of it, I suggest that they start at about 0 In the morning, take their picnic lunch with thein, as there are plenty of picnic spots, or you can get an excellent dinner at the Blake ho tel at Etna. Particular attention Is called to those who desire to see the deer that they do not come out of the brush until late in the afternoon and that most may be seen Just before dusk. The recent closing of the Rogue river to commercial fishermen Is al ready bringing benefits to this sec tion It ww announced by Chamber of Commerce officials yesterday While It was naturally expected that the prohibiting of commercial fish ing in the Rogue would be beneficial it was not expected that results would be proven so early. A striking example of benefits al ready accruing was in evidence yes terday when George Bower of Santa Barbara. California, called on the Chamber of Commerce to discuss the ' recent closing of the Rogue. Mr. Bow- ' er hss visited southern Oregon the t past five years during the summer ! and Is an ardent fisherman. He spent June. July and August of last year fishing In the Rogue, returned for deer hunting In the fell, and Is now : spending an extensive vacation at ', Casey's Camp on the Crater Lake i highway. On Friday, with a five ounce j casting rod. he caught a seventeen- ' pound salmon and during his four j weeks visit here he has so far netted ! fourteen salmon ranging In weight I from ten to twenty-two pounds. On I being Interviewed yesterday by the manager of the Chamber of Com merce Mr. Bower stated: "I can no tice a difference already In the Rogue river. Pishing is Infinitely bet ter than has existed In five years and It Is certainly 100 per cent better than lat year. I compliment the leg islature of the state of Oregon In having closed the Rogue river to com mercial fishermen. Money received from the tourists, particularly the fishermen, will be of more value than the commercial fish ing Industry. I am going to tell all my friends In Santa Barbara when 1 return about the ltttle success I have had and I expect many of them to come up and stay with you for sev eral weeks to try their luck In your world famous Rogue river." It Is re ported by Chamber of Commerce of ficials that many fishermen have ox pressed themselves forcibly in a fa vorable manner regarding the clos ing of the Rogue. The pictures were taken on the newlv completed stretch which runs throuah the San Francisco PraiHt HUNDREDS OF DEER SEEN IN SCOTT VALLES JAUNT Last week the Mall Tribune pub lished the first of a series of sug gested week-end auto trips, In an effort to give readers the enjoy ment of traveling some of the less known byways of this region. This week's tour suggestion was con tributed by H. O. Prohbach and the Mall Tribune will welcome fur ther contributions from those who have experienced particular pleasure In exploring some route not generally traveled. Leave Medford at about I any af ternoon and drive one mile south of Yreka, where you turn west to go to Scott valley. Eight miles of the next 17 are over Scott mountain to Fort Jones. Then 13 miles to Etna. The road up to this point Is all paved. South from Etna for 14 miles to the ghost mining town of Callahan and where also is located a CCC camp. Scott Valley Is one of the most pro ductive localities of northern Califor nia and Is rich In Its agricultural industries. It Is well watered and hay and grains as well as stock and dairy cattle abound. At Callahan you leave Scott Valley for a 14-mlle drive toward the Parker corporation ranches. This ranch be gins at the little school house on the : left hand side of the road. From here on for the next four or five miles you will see the most Interest ing sight, deer grazing In the mead ows on both sides of the road. In the early days. James Parker, whose widow lives In the cement block house on the right hand of the road, created a private game preserve for deer and since then the state of Cali fornia game commission has contin ued the same. Here In the latter part of the afternoon, and particularly so Just before dusk, you will see hun dreds of deer coming out of the brush Into the open meadows. The . exact number of deer In this preserve , is not known, but estimated at sev- j eral thousand, for as many as 700 1 have been counted In the meadows i at one time several years ago. ! A few miles farther on you reach the summit of Parker mountain and from there on to Gazelle on the Pa cific highway.
