Ken Maynard on Rialto Screen til li i. i riirn I 1 1H r r i I ' ' . V. -V- ..!J 7 'fji, Departing from the ordinary. Ken Maynard. starring In his newest pic ture, "In Old Santa Fe." Is at the Rialto theater for today and Satur day. Laid In the picturesque Sante Fe Trail section, the film boasts of more than the usual thrills to be found In this type of picture, with music furnished mostly by Gene Autrey, fa mous cowboy radio star and ro mance with Evalyn Knftpp. Hitherto, the strikers, who are said to constitute less thnn 10 per cent of the 300 men employed by the Holmes-Eureka company, have pur sued peaceful methods. At other points, northward along the Pacific coast to Orogon and Washington, the lumber strike has resulted in several, outbursts but to day's episode was the first of the kind In Humboldt county, center of north ern California lumbering activity. I PORTLAND. Ore.. June 21. (AP) I Hope that differences leading to the ; northwest lumber striko would soon . be Ironed out grew today with the announcement that a sawmill In the ; lower Columbia area would re -open I Monday and that 10 snip II logging cp ; eratlons in the same sector already had resumed work, j Negotiations for the re-opening of I other mil 1b and crimps were declared j by union leaders to be in progress, 1 and while no official confirmation has been forthcoming reports persist that several Portland operators will place men at work next week. Managers of the nine Portland plants which advertised for workers early this week said about 1500 ap plications had been received. Sixty per cent, they said, wero from former employes. In the meantime, however, no word from the labor temple had been Is sued which would lead to the belief that the 2000 men who cheered their leaders' plea to "stand pat" Wednes day night had altered their views. Warner Baxter Has Role At Craterian Those who remember Warner Bar ter as the "Cisco Kid" in the picture of the same name, also In his first talking film "In Old Arizona." have Undoubtedly wished many times to see this colorful character again brought to the screen by Baxter. In "Under the Pampas Moon, which opened last night at the Cra terian theater, the popular Mr. Baxter portrays an Argentine Pampas gau cho who can ride, throw the bolea dora, sing, dance and woo the ladles more proficiently than any of his comrades a role far more colorful and romantic than the original "Cis co Kid." Co-starring with Warner Baxter, In this colorful production. Is Kettl Gal llnn, who sprang Into Instant popu larity in her first Amerlcnn picture. "Marie Oalante." Miss Oalllan por trays the role of a beautiful cabaret entertainer from Paris who. bound for an engagement In Buenos Aires. Argentina, meets Buxter when her piano becomes disabled and lands In the vast expanse of the pampas. Baxter falls madly In love with the beautiful "angel," but Kettl departs for Buenos Aires, where later their romance flowers amid exciting adven tures and conflicting emotions. Veloz and Yolanda. the celebrated dance team that has long been a fa vorite In South America and the United States, are featured In the film In a new sensation "The Cobra Tango." Western Drama On Roxy Coming Bill Supposing you were In love with a beautiful girl, whoso father had or dered you off his ranch, and when he had the unfortunate incident of being robbed of all the gold he had stored In the house, you were accused of the crime. And strangely all the evidence pointed its finger at you as being the guilty one. Tills Is the situation Juan Hernan dez, a youthful Mexican finds him self in "Devils Canyon." coming to morrow to the Roxy theater. How he overcomes suspicion and finally out wits the real guilty parties as well as wins the hand of the one he loves Is told In this great Western picture, Noah Beery, jr., takes the part of Juan and Is supported by ft notable cast.
