PAGE SIX IffiDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON", THURSDAY. JUNE 20, 1935- Pair With Speed and Science Will Tangle on Armory Mat Tonight WOLFE AND HUBKA PROMISE THRILLS Action Also Slated in Semi Final When Soos and SmolinskiWIeet McWood and Olson to Open Card One of the rare wrestling matches when speed merchant meets speed merchant la sin tod for the Armory grip and grimace arena tonight when "Iron Man" Joe Hubka of Nebraska, who haa given fans many a top-notch aclentlfle exhibition, meets Lea Wolfe, tall Texan tusaler. In the main event of a three match program. There will be no smearing and sneering when these two get together, but there will also be no namby pamby playing around, for both con testants are out for blood In a clean way. Hubka has a reputation here as being "tops' In popularity, and when tie was told that Mr. Wolfe also en Joys great friendship from the fans, he announced that he wotitd make the bV southerner look sick. Very few times has Hubka been seen with his dander up, but the return of the I handsome Texan, who seems to rate high among the women fans, has plainly Irked the strong-legged Corn- busker. It has been some time since Hub ka has had a chance to display his razzle-dazzle technique and fancy leg work, due to the fact that he has been stacked up against meanle wrestlers for the past several months. With the opportunity of meeting a elean grappler, he declares that he Is going to put on the fireworks. Wolfe, who arrived yesterday. Is In fine fettle and anxious for the go. He, too, dislikes unorthodox mat work and has mastered many clever holds that promise the former Uni versity of Nebraska football star a busy evening. Johnny Soos, another musclar from he mtddlewest. will return for his second appearance here' In the 40 tnlnute semi -final when he tangles with Babe Smollnnkl, aggressive bone bender who has a dislike for Soos that threatens to develop a grudge match. Plenty of action Is slated for this aeotlon of the program, as both Rrap piers like to settle things via the quickest possible route, be It ortho dox wrestling or a few punches on the chin. Fireman Ray Friable, who Is scheduled to referee, will probably have a busy time In this tussle, mak ing the boys behave properly. Centering the spotlight In the opening engagement will be Herman Olson, Swedish entrsnt In the recent International mat tournamentnt Los Anglee, who will exchange hugs and huffs for 30 minutes or one fall with Johnny McWood, ex-footbsller from U. C. L. A. McWood. strong as a Hon and par tial to clean matwork, puts on an In teresting performance and will have ample opportunity for clever tendon twisting against the highly-touted Cwede. Man -handler From Indiana V . .J -A Je- A L: Johnny Hons (nhnre), aggressive man-handler from Indiana. Is being pointed to furnlwh the explosives on tonight's three-ply wrestling eard nt the armory In a 4.5-mlmite seml-flnal tussle with Ha be .Smollnskl, tal ented Polish grnpplrr. A "Memel semester," with special lectures on Memel, ha been estab lished at the University of Kaunas. PHILADELPHIA, June 20. (AP) Despite a 60-pound weight disadvan tage. Tommy Loughran. erstwhile light heavyweight champion, today ruled the favorite over Ray Impelllt- tere, New York state giant, for their 10-round bout at the Phillies' ball park tonight. Loughran scaled 168 at the weigh- In yesterday, while the New Yorker tippet? the beam at 2M. In spite of this, the odds on a victory for Phila delphia's "old master" were 7 to B. The bout was postponed from last night because of rain. SIM TOSSES SPEERS QUICKLY PORTLAND, ore.. June 30 (API Hans Stelnke, didn't waste any time last night In his wrestling bout with Frank Speers. Just to prove It could be done, the 2A0-pound Stelnke ended his share of the double bill by toss ing Speers twice straight In 10 min utes. The other half of the double bill found Casey Kazan Jinn and Jaggat Singh with honors even at the end of the allotted hour. Harry Kent of HUlsboro won from Tony Catallno of Chicago with a fly ing tackle In the second round of the preliminary. Joe Parelllof, Chi cago, and Ray Lampman of Sarra mento to a draw in the second prelim. Nagano province, Japan, has a cherry tree estimated to be 1000 years old, which still blooms fully. E WITH ROGUE NINE Manager Hoffard of the Medford Rogues this morning received the following telegram from the Detroit Colored Giants, who were scheduled to appear here Saturdny afternoon: "Sorry, please cancel game; can't get there. Play you later." The wire had been sent from Hope, British Co lumbia. The Rogues had already tacked up posters from one end of the valley to the other, and a largo crowd had been anticipated. Hoffard believes the Giants missed connections some way, and had been marooned In the Canadian city, in that they were scheduled to play Grant Pass to morrow, the Rogues Saturday, snd Klamath Falls Sunday. As far aa the Roguew are concerned, they would Just as soon pass up the Giant battle, as they have one of their most crucial games of the season Sunday when they mmt the Ashland Llthlans In the tiny field at Ashland to decide the occupants of the southern Oregon league cel lar. A win for the Rogues would put them In a tie for top honors, and a win for Ashland would do the same for that outfit. As yet Hoffard has received no word from Chesterfield, the Kelso wonder twlrler, and he la planning to start either Prltchett or Hardy against the Llthlans. Hardy Is a great chucker, though young, and has been given a conditional release from the Ashland club. He was one of the Llthtan'a ace hurlers the first of the season, before Chief McLean moved from behind the rub ber to the pltcher'a mound. Prltchett. former Seala bomber, has been putting hot packs on his arm for weeks, and working out assidu ously. He now believes he Is ready to wring the Ashland necks with his twisting curves and dodging floaters. Hoffard, In commenting on Prlt- chett's performances In recent work outs, ssys that the big twlrler la as good as he was In his professional days, and If his arm will stand the pace should take Ashland In a walk. The game will start at 3:30, and several carloads of Medford fans have planned to attend. REUS TROPHY Mrs. J. C.
