THTIEE FINE FIGHT CARD WITH GCC TALENT ENJOYED BY ELKS Art Lager, powerful scrapper from Wlmer, declsioned Chief Thomas of Bradford In the main event on the ink -CCC smoker at the Elka Tem ple Thursday evening. While this event brought together two well matched fighters, it wm by no means the twst event on the card, for the Rudy Lezar-De Shields go as by far the best battle seen here In many months. These two boys went at It hammer and tongs until Lezar. who hails from South Fork, dropped De Shields of Oak Knoll In the second. Zlady, of Headquarters Detach ment, proved the iron man of the evening. He beat Nelson of Indian Creek with a technical knockout In the first round and then returned to fight Mercado, also of Indian Creek, to a draw. De Morazo, pint-sized fighter from Kerby, declsioned Shorty McVfly of Evans Creek In the second bout, of the evening. Joe Luchesl, of Oregon Caves, opened the card by knocking out Victor Angon. of Gasquet. The card was staged before a good crowd and proved & thriller from start to finish. The next card of the series will be held May 33. and the series will be ended with a big outdoor picnic card June 14. KINGFISH WARNED BY TYDINGS THAT TM .E Wall St. Report NEW YORK, May 10. (AP) Sen ator Tydings (D., Md.) warned Sena tor Long angrily today that some of his arguments might provoke some thing that "won't be vocal." The outburst from the tall senator from Maryland came when Long de clared in the senate that Tydings and others had voted to permit banks to borrow 1 00 oe n ts on the doll a r but now were refusing similar pay ments tj soldiers through the bonus. The retort also was prompted by Long's assertion that the president would find himself In a difficult po sition If he refused to sign the bo nus bill. Long also said the president received 10.000 a year aa assistant secretary of the navy without firing guns. "I hope the senator from Louisiana will make reference to his own serv ice In the world war," Tydings de clared. "I have explained that to the satis faction of my own people many times," Long replied. He refused to yield the floor to Tydings to tell of Long's war service and Tydings snapped: "You msy have to make an argu ment and It won't be vocal." LONDON, Eng.. May 10. (AP) The Exchange Telegraph correspondent at Stockholm today reported that the Soviet flag had been unfurled from the masthead of the "Drottning . Vic toria," one of Sweden's largest battle ships, causing wild rumors of an up rising plotted by communists. Naval authorities and civil police maintained tieht-lipped silence, the Exchange Telegraph dispatch Mid. saying merely, "We are Investigating." It could not be learned immedi ately, the dispatch said, whether the flag had been hoisted aloft by some one who smuggled it aboard or by a sailor aboard the battleship. 20 HOIS DESTROYED BY FIFE, WASH., FIRE TACOMA. An almost complete lack of water left the fire free to run its course before a 30-mile v:!nd and an area nearly a half mile square was burned over. LOCATION OF HUGE (Continued irom rage One) love In 1930 and though he was out pointed by the clever colored boy. Hoy D. Cans at San Francisco in 1931 he marked the end of Gans aa a serious contender for middleweight honors. In the fight last night Steamboat was trying for a comeback. The fight was close and some thought the de cision should have been a draw. Fu ture Elk cards should bring the men together again and prove to the satis faction of all whether the Steamer can beat Time and the Indian. '"T3T1WITH THE VALLEY TRADE IS THE VALLEY MADE BE WISE BUY WISE AND ECONOMIZE ATgJS given out. speculation grew here that the huge Armada greatest ocean fly ing group ever assembled possibly I slopped at French Frigate Shoals. 500 miles away, or at Pearl and Hermes Reef, 100 miles from Midway. Rain was falling and a 24-mile wind blowing at Midway when the airmen took off starting at 7:19 a.m., (9:48 p .in., Pacific standard time) lending credence to the belief the planes might nave stopped short of the tiny island. There Is no means of communica tion between here wid the s'.ioals or Pearl ajd Hermes reef, and since radio silence Is maintained at Pearl Harbor there was no immediate way of determining the planes where abouts. Ten to 12 hours had been esti mated as the time necessary for a flight to Midway island, which would have brought the planes there from 5:18 p.m. to 7:18 p.m., (7:48 p.m., to 10:48 am.. Thursday. Pacific time). The takeoff was without a hitch, and despite the silence of officials in revealing whereabouts of the armada, there was nothing to indicate any fears were felt for its safety. The changing positions of the 46 ships, as they sped over the trackless Pacific where no other plane ever had ventured, was believed known to forces of the United States Navy, now maneuvering in a 5.000,000 square mile triangle of the North Pacific in their 1935 war games. II DEFIES Til TO TRY COMEBACK IN ARENA The CCC camps, temporary deposit depots for many a man who was good when times were better, turned up a man last night at the Elks club's smoker who used to be one of the pre:nler middle weight fighters of the Pacific coast. Steamboat Jackson (Art Lager) now a member of Com pany 064 at Camp Wlmer was a stxim bling block for many a middleweight championship contender before Time began to subtract from his legs and add to his waistline. Last night at the Elks club when he gained the decision over Chief Thomas of Bradford, he was playing again his favorite role of discouraging good fighters. Chief Thomas had been unable to find a CCC fighter willing to face him in the ring until Steamboat turned up at Wlmer. The Steamer is well known to fight fans in southern Oregon. He knocked out Jack Kentworth and Jack Breed 'S ELKS CLUB TONIGHT Medford Glee men will have a re hearsal tonight at the Elks' club, It was announced by President Beach today, in preparation f the spring concert which is to be given Monday.
