Chapter 37 SHOOTING PEBBLES LOOK of wonder ran over the faces of the guards. They turned their heads ever so little towards one another. A glimmer of appre hension and relief came .mo their eyes. They had learned one new point In the endless riddle of their master'! mind. "And why have you wanted to ride through Mexico, up and down?" asked Juan-Stlva. "It Is a great country, with plenty to see." said Montana, "And I have seen most ot It!" he boasted. "If you have seen It, why do you" atlll come?" "To see It all again, sefior." El Keed Is known to be a pleasant fellow and perhaps thla la really El Keed. Think, then, It I catch In my hand. In one day, a ftlar and El Keed, walking together! But El Keed," he went on, "carrlea with him a magic pair ot guna that never mini." "Mine miss plenty of times," said Montana, frankly. IT WAS not hea'. that waa making hlra sweat, now; It waa the thought ot Joining those rows, of chained laborers In the Hold. "Set him free, toot and band," commanded Juan-Sllva. This was done Instantly. Juan Sllva dipped his hand and his with ered arm Into the water that ran before him and picked out one ot the big, shining while pebbles. As soon as It was taken from the water the silver brilliance began to leave IL "This Is a bird. It takes wing. Shoot II, triond!" said Juan-Sllva, and tossed the stone Into the air. The gun flashed Into the hand ot the Kid, but he missed that best mo ment when the stone bangs a trifle at the top of the throw. He missed It there; be missed It as It gathered speed In the descent; but his third ounet turned the rock Into a puff ot wnite dust when It was Jusi above the ground. He heard a slight murmur among the guards, and saw the flash ot their malice. "And that," said Juan-Sllva, "was still worse. But all good things come In threes. So here you are again!"
