Coach Don Faber'a Ash land high school Grlrelles will under go a strenuous practice week In prep aration for the first game of the en nual Medford-Ashland "blood" series at Medford Friday night to determine the southern Oregon representative to the state tournament at Salem next month. t Although boasting the finest rec ord In thetetate and being odds on favorites to capture the district title for the second straight year, Fnber and his high powered Grizzlies en tertain no fond hopes that the game is already In the well-known bag. In fnc,t the players, and Faber especial ly, are going about their work with fingers well crossed reason being that memory of last year's upset Just won t disappear. It will be remembered that Med ford, after a brush with the State athletic board over a barn-palntlng episode, played their second string and walloped Ashland decisively to tie up the district race, after losing to the Grizzlies with their varsity. Then to top matters, the Tigers pre sented Ashland with the champion ship without playing off the tie, which made the Ashlanders feel no I less than very cheap. So this year, although comparative scores tend to show that Ashland , can't lose, there Is no Idea among the ! players, coach or local fans of tak ing the Medford embrogllo In stride. Faber knows that his team can't win by playing Just good basketball, be cause It Is history that Medford al ways clicks at their best when play ing Ashland while the Grizzlies are usually way below their usual form. Sentiment In these parts seems to be to the effect that if Darwin Bur gher's Tigers can find a way of stop ping Ashland's scoring twins Hardy and Hoxle that Medford will even up the district race. The two gang ling tossers have scored a total of 400 points between them, more than half of Ashland's 723 point total. Hardy has a total of 221 markers In 19 games for an average of 11. 6 per bat tle while Hoxle has flicked the hemp for 179 points In 20 affairs, and 89 game average. It has been flaunted loudly In Ash land that the Grizzlies of this year are the greatest team In the school's history. Maybe so, but the wiser of the fans, those who have seen Medford-Ashland feuds for the past twen ty years, are holding their pace and their praises until after Friday night.
