U. have planned an all-day institute to be held In tho South Methodist church. Thursday. February 14. The morning business session will commence at 10:30 with Mrs. M. Russell leadlnjr devotions. The president. Mrs. Oldenburg, explain the national membership drive plan Members are remlnd'rt that the state treasurer wishes all dues In by March 1. Mrs. Bell Littrell will conduct the noon-tldc prayer service. A covered dish lunch will be served at noon In the basement ol the church. The afternoon meeting opens at 2:00 o'clock with a devotional per iod led by Rev. E. A. Oldenburg. A fine program of readings, music and addresses on different departments of the W. C. T. U. activities will be presented. All friends of the Union and everyone Interested Is Invited to attend. "Japan" Theme At Missionary Meeting The Women's Missionary society ot the- First Christian church met In regular session Wednesday. A short prayer service prf.-ceded the business period. The devotional service, chosen and prepared by a group of Japanese women, was given by Mrs. Arnold Bohnert. The program theme, "The Sunrise KinRdom and the Sunrise," was presented by Mrs. Ruth Wood. "What I ought to know about ' Japan." was the topic of ft number of Mrs. Wood and Mrs. Smith. "Sucawara San Speaks," first in stallment of a serial story In which she tells of village life, and beginning of Christianity In Japan, was given by Mrs. Gladys Jewett. Mrs. James Grlgsby. Mrs. J. T. Davis, and Mrs. C. V. Bolderston pre sented a dramatization. "Helping to Build the Little Church," which showed the early Christian consecra tion and sacrifice. At the close of the program, re freshments were served to thirty three members and friends. Mrs. Furnas Mill Be P. E. O. Hostess Chapter AA. P. E. O.. will- meet Thursday evening, Feb. 14 with Mrs. C. C. Furnas. 41 Ross avenue. Mrs. J. C. Fliegel will have charge of the program and Mrs. Furnas will be as sisted by Mrs. E. E. Kelly. Lewis Parker Host To Group of Friends Lewis Parker entertained a number of his friends at the home- of his aunt, Mrs. Frank True. Five hundred was enjoyed with four tables In play and appropriate prizes were given. An angel food cake for high score was won by John Seller. Low score was won by Ethel Sowell. Mlis Drury Entertains Guests at Slumber Party. The Drury home on South Oak dale was the scene of an old fash ioned slumber party Friday evening. Seven girls of Medford's younger jt were guests. Elizabeth Wenstron and Peggy Pandles. In this city from Eugene, were the honored guests. T.ie local girls attending were Waunita Wll son, Jeanne Leverette. Pauline Rogers. Carol Scheffel, and the hostess, Miss Mildred Drury. Miss Randies' and Miss Wenstron will return to Eugene tomorrow by train. Crater ,ake Guild! Has Valentine's 5'urty A delightful Valentine party was held by Crater Lake Guild Monday evening at the Perry home on West Main street, with Mrs. Frances Perry Fllnn. Emily Dynan. and Ella Pen nlnston entertaining. Devotions were led by Mrs. Dorothy Barr. followed by the business meet ing. During Vhe social hour a paper on the orlein of Valentine's day was given by Emily Dynan. Valentines were made by the guests and prizes awarded for the most successful ef forts. Mrs. Esther M. Sanderson sang a number of love songs In keeping with the theme. The president. Mrs. B. O. Hard ing, opened the meeting, and after the short business session, Mrs. Laura West, chairman for the afternoon, gave a very entertaining and compre- henslve review of the book "Robber Barons," by Matthew Josephsorr. The book deals with the early days and later business life of those cap tains of Industry who were respon sible for the building of railroads and telegraph lines, and the earlier devel opment of the country's resources. Vanderbllt, Astor. Goujd, and many others, are Included in the list of "barons" who fortunes, (according to the author) were amassed by ques tionable methods. "God's Gold," written by John T. Flynn, concerns the development and exploitation of the oil Industry by John D. Rockefeller. The facta ire told in an Impartial way. and many interesting side-lights are thrown on the character of the man who has been auch an Important figure in the business life of the nation, said Mrs. W. J. Warner, In giving a splendid review of this book. Current topics, presented by Mrs. T. W. Miles covered a wide range of interesting, Important happenings. M - Dentists Organize Dental Study Club Medford members of the Southern Oregon Dental society were entertain ed Tuesday evening by Dr. and Mrs. P. H. Johnson and Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Paske with a dinner at the Paske residence. At thla time the Medford Dental Study club was organized with Dr. E. O. Bidden as president and Dr. R. L. Burdlc aa secretary. Much Interest was shown and at the next meeting a paper on "Effect ot oral pathology on general health will be presented by Dr. Robert Van Valzah. Dr. C. E. Kunte will open the discussion. Dr. Paske will also give a resume of a recent article In the Journal of the American Dental association. Junior Musicians Have Business Meeting A meeting of the Junior Musicians was held February 8 at the studio of Effle Herbert Yeoman, the teacher. Catherine and Laura Gentner, Bebe Hoem, Donald and rreva Croicher. Philip Henselman end Patricia Dlppel. The guests were Mrs. Croucher and Mrs. Sims. DeMolay Degrees Are Conferred at Grants Pass Last Thursday night, February 7. Medford Order of DeMolay went to Grants Pass, where the second de gree was conferred on members of the Medford and Grants Pass chap ters. Much praise was given the Grants Pass order because of the excellent and colorful work they did In con ferring the degree. Refreshments were served after ihe ceremony and a good time was en Joyed. Dancing will start at 9:30, with good music promised. The hall will be decorated in the Valentine motif, and the usual good time Is anticipated. Those wishing to secure tickets for out-of-town guests should do through the secretary. Mrs. C. A. Meeker, radio chairman for Crater Lake Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Is arranging two programs to be broadcast thru the courtesy and cooperation of KMED. These programs will consist of pa triotic and musical numbers, and the first will be broadcast on Lincoln's birthday. Feb. 13. at 6:30 p. m. Miss Sara Van Meter will give a reading and Mr. A. J. MacDonough will sing two vocal solos. The second program will be pre sented on Washington's birthday, Feb. 22 at 11:45 a. m. and will consist of a reading by Mrs. Volney Dixon and two vocal numbers by Mrs. C. .H. Paske. For the benefit of Ite Student Loan fund. Crater Lake chapter, D. A. R. will sponsor a sale of tickets for the picture, "The President Vanished" at the Craterian theatre, Feb. 11 and 12. Through the generous cooperation of Mr. Hunt, each ticket sold by the chapter will increase this fund. Friends of the D. A. R. are asked to telephone Miss Van Meter, Student Loan chairman, No. 995-W or No. 758, or any member of the chapter for tickets. Lincoln Service Club To Have Annual Lincoln Tea The Lincoln Service club will give its annual Lincoln tea, Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 3 o'clock at the Lincoln school. Disabled Veterans Will Meet Tuesday Disabled American Veterans of the World war, Jackson county chapter No. 8, and their auxiliary will meet February 12 at 8 p. m., at the armory, for a regular business meeting. Pythian Sisters to Hate Valentine Party Pythian Sisters club met at the home of Mrs. C. W. Whillock. 1714 West Tenth street on January 32. After a short business session, names were drawn for the Calanthae Sister club, the remainder of the eve ning being spent In playing bridge.
