(AP) The Union OU baaketball team of Portland defeated the Oregon State college Beavera, 83 to 81, tonight in s, speedy, thrill-soaked game decided la ino laat quarter minute oi piny. A week ago the Ollere defeated the Beavers, 38 to 30. But tonight Coach Armory T. "Slats" Dili's Staters were better organised and piled up a. commanding 10 to 11 half time lead. But the lead was not enough to withstand the forceful, brilliant comeback the talented Oilers made. At the start of the second period the Oilers scored 20 polnta while holding the Beavera to three. Then Folen and Palmberg scored to start a rally which brought the Beavers abreast the Ollere at 31-all with but 18 seconds left to play. But Folen, Beaver center, fouled the maaalve Oretrter, Oiler center, who dropped In a free throw for the winning point. Folen made a fntntle effort to tie the score when he ob tained the ball, but his howitzer shot from mid-floor missed the net Just aa the gun ended the game. Trojans Win. SEATTLE, Dec. 22 (AP) The University of Southern California Trojans raced to a 40 to 24 win to night over the Washington Kusklea, evening up their two-game pre-sea-eon series, but the triumph may be costly aa Lee Outtero, Trojans' star center, Injured his leg In the last few minutes of plsy and was carried from the floor. Washington won last night. SB to 80. Outtero, star of the encounter, dropped In nine baskets for 18 polnta, shooting with either hand from almost any position near the basket, until he collided with Bobby (Ooose) Osier, Washington captain, with only four mlnutea to play. He waa helped from the floor, with his right leg doubled up under him. A few mlnutea after the game was over, however, Coach Sam Barry of the Trojans announced from the dressing room that Outtero had suf fered only bsd bone bruise, but would be kept out of competition s, short time. The Trojans leaped to the front as the game began, starting with Out tero'a opening baaket, and ran the count to 0 to 1. Osier tallied for the Huskies, but with Outtero driv ing his mates ahead and tallying 13 polnta himself the first half, the Trojans ended the half In front, 31 to 13. The barnstorming Chicago team. coached by Paul Schlssler, former Oregon State college mentor, comes here fresh from a series of triumphs In southern California. The Giants conquered the same southern oppo sition during the regular California league season. The game will be played at Kezar stadium starting at 2 p. m. JUNIORS DEFEAT J'VILLE QUINTS In a double header basketball show between Medford J Junior high school and two teams from Jacksonville, the first game of the season was played In the eighth grade basketball tourna ment of the county when a fast Med ford eighth grade quintet, display ing basketball that took the Interest away from the main game, defeated Jacksonville eighth grade by one point. 24 to 23. Stead, local center, led the scor ing with eight points and was the star of the game, although every member of the squad had basket eyes.
