MEDFOKD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16. 1931 PAGE NINE DRAMATIC WORLD WAR PICTURE' IS PREVIEWED IRE Exceeding the promise oj it moit enthusiastic advance reports and proving Itself the most powerful of the war films yet released, "The First World War," was shown yes terday by George A. Hunt at a special preview for a group of officials of the American Legion and a repre sentative of the Mail Tribune, who followed It with absorbed and breath less attention. "The First World War" was in spired by the sensational book oi Laurence Stalling by the same title, one of the real publishing feats of its day. Stallings, long known as one of America's outstanding authorities and commentators on the World War, haa edited the film In the same spirit and with the same suc cess that attended his sponsorship of the book It Is the biggest story that Fate ( ever wrote. Watching it unfold, one nas the sense that Its every scene is a living newspaper headline; for every incident is a drama which helped to write' world history. The editorial skill employed In the creation of this amazing film baa made it one of the most potent pleas for peace ever presented. Yet it is in no respect a preachment. Attended by Laurence fitalUngs biting and ironic comments, its sequences I picture the World War step by step from its inception and before to Ita conclusion. Scenes of trench, war fare alternate with intimate glimpses of the home life of Europe's mon arch. Mighty scenes of conflict at sea are varied with sequences from the secret archives of many nations, photographed behind the lines during the war and never before revealed to the public. Among the world figures who ap pear in the film, many of them in unguarded and Intimate views, when they were unaware of the presence of a camera, are' King George, the Kaiser, Lloyd George, Wilson, Lenin, Trotsky, the late King Alexander ot Jugoslavia, King Albert, King Al fonso, the Prince of Wales, the Crown Prince of Germany JiiVu h' '"amii, Emperor Franz Joseph and many others. According to present plans the pic ture will be shown In Medford soon, under .the auspices of the American Legion. Mead Returns From Portland Meeting: De Soto Is Shown N.
