WASHINGTON. (UP) Dr. Albert F. Zahm, chief congressional Ubrary'a aeronautics division, believes the air plane actually was Invented 80 yeara before OrvlUe and Wilbur Wright made their famous flight at Kitty Hawk, N. C. Dr. Zahm was wartime chief engi neer for a leading airplane manufac turer. In his present post, he la tha custodian of what la acknowledged to be the worlds' largest collection of aeronautical literature. The Wrights He said that as far as ha knew, the Wrights "did a lot of Inventing that was original with them but not new." He believes the brothers should receive due credit for their air pio neering, out doesn't think they should be called the "Fathers of Aviation." Dr. Zahm said the history of avia tion began In Britain In the first de cade of the 10th century when Sir George Cayley made a full scale glid er that carried a man and was pro pelled by gravity. However, be declared, the princi ples upon which man flying U based were the work of the following men: Actual Drawing In 184 W tilt am Daniel Hanson, an Eng lishman, who. In 1842 made an act ual working drawing of an airplane equipped with all features essential to pioneer flight.' Alexander Qoupll of France, who Invented the modern system of air plane control by ailerons In 1884. F. J. Strlngfellow. another Eng lishman, who, in 1848, built a model plane, acaled to Henson's designs, powered It with a steam engine and made It fly. Credits Mackenzie-Kennedy Another man who may be credited with scientific development of avia tion, Dr. Zahm said, la MaJ. C. H. J. Mackenzie -Kennedy, who waa accus ed ot being a apy at the recent naval house affairs subcommittee Investi gation of navy airplane purchases. He had testified that American war planes were considerably below Eu ropean standards. Major Mackenzie-Kennedy design ed an airplane which would carry a machine gun and Its operator In tht tail, behind the rudder, thla obviat ing a former military Inconvenience. This, Dr. Zahm believes, waa tha first airplane capable of carrying an equal load of passe n gers or m ate rlals from the nose of the ship to lt tall. H. H. PALMER OF ASHLAND, Oct. 39. (Spl) H.
