PAGE EIGHT MEDFORD MATL TRTBUXE, MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1934 Assassinated Alexander Tyrant of Deepest Dye Says Ashland Observer "Compared with tha liu King Alexander of Yugoalavla. Adolph Hit ler li a dove with an olive branch," declared Gordon Claycomb last night In a talk to Aahland'a aerrlce club In the Ashland hotel. Claycomb haa apent the laat five yeara In Vienna, atudylng music, covering newspaper asalgnments In Yugoalavla and Bulgaria, making fre quent trlpa through the smaller Balkan states. King Broke raltn. "The country of Yugoslavia was established after the World war wltn Alexander on the throne," stated Clay, comb. "The king promised his people a psrllamentary form of government, but failed to keep faith. In 1929, Alexander established a political dic tatorship, after gradually usurping most of the liberties and wealth or his people. "Exploitation la too mild a term to use. He actually robbed his peo ple. He waa known aa the wealthiest monarch In the world, outside the Orient. Built Great Palaces. "His palaces and atate buildings would do Justice to a major power, such aa England, France, or the United States. To build them, he robbed the people In the southern provinces, and concentrated all the wealth in Serbia, which he was aure would re main loyal. He realized that a re vision of treatlea and national boun daries was Inevitable, and that It waa necessary for the continuance of his reign to concentrate hla power aa quickly as possible. "Yugoslavia haa a population ol some 14.noo.000, four million of whom are Serbs, and ten million of whom are dissident minorities, each of which desires Independence. Thus, there haa been a huge opposition to the policies of Alexander, who main tained himself solely through ruth less, military means. - Revenge la Motive. "The Crotlana, one of the moat de termined of the opposition groups, vowed to get revenge after an occur rence In 1031, when their two most able leadera were assassinated on the floor of the Yugoslavian parliament. Crotlana then determined to kill Alex ander aa aoon as he set foot out of the country. "The king had many other crimes to his record, which Intensified the hate felt by the Crotlana. People were shot down In the atreeta by police. Others were murdered In their homes, or In the compartments of railway trains. Will Not Cause War. "Reaults of the recent assassina tions In Marseilles? It doesn't appear that anything dangerous will hap pen to disturb the general peace ol Europe. But If Petrus Kslemen had been a Macedonian Instead of a Cro tlan, things might be different. Mace donia Is also a dlastdent gfoup who hated the king. Protected by Italy and Bulgaria, Yugoslavia would prob ably have declared war on those two oountrles, and Prance, who haa apent millions in Yugoslavia In an attempt to build a "ring of steel" around Ger many, would be drawn Into the quar rel on the side of Yugoslavia." In describing the general European eltuatlon one of tense waiting Claycomb aald: Prance to Blame, "France la to .blame for the altna tlon on ' the continent today. Her constant fear of Germany has led her Into certain policies, under the guise or building for the future. She has Invested enormous sums In the gov ernments that border on Germany, especially Poland and Caechoalovakla. besides Yugoslavia. She wanted to build an armed wall around Ger many that would be under the die tatorahlp of France. The Oerman re action to this la Hltlerlsm. "France couldn't ' expect the Ger man race to live under auch condi tions, to aubmlt to outside domina tion. Germany lost faith In dis armament. Franca waa trying to make Oerman sons suffer for the sins of their fathers, and the sons refuse to suffer silently. Two Dangerous Crises. "Two crises In Europe this year could have started a war the assaa slnatlona of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfusa of Austria, and of Kin Alexander. But the principal Weapon of peace la the lark of sufficient funds In all countries. "But the countries are picking sides now, and a war la not far off." Returning to the Balkans, the s eaker described a revolutionary or ganisation In Yugoslavia that was almost aa strong as the state. A large papulation of Bulgarlana are violently discontented under Yugoslavian rule, and m'iBh to return to Bulgaria. Parly Is Powerful. "Aa a result," said Claycomb. "the most powerful revolutionary organi sation the world haa ever known has BY ORDER OF EVICTION CLEVELAND. Of course, they meet with in- ' tense opposition from the nominal government. But all the members : of the group would rather die than j to give up the cause, and the move ment remains alive, despite numer oua assassinations. "With the death of Alexander, the dictatorship has been broken. The most likely result will be the estab lishment of an ultimate military dic ta torshlpV The talk met with an enthusiastic reception, end he has been Invited to continue his story of European politics at the meeting next Wednesday.
