ATHLETIC CLUB FOR BOYS PLAN OF EAGLE LODGE Constructive Civic Service Will Provide Healthy Physical Recreation for Youngsters From 16 to 21 Establishment of modern athletic club for boys between the age of 10 and 21 in Mcdford la th objective or the local aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eaglea It la announced by Presi dent A. H. Banwell, following the regular meeting of the lodge Friday night. Jack Huexton, golf professional at the Rogue Valley Golf club, has been appointed chairman of a committee to Investigate the possibilities of the establishment of euch a club and re ports that he has already received a great deal of encouragement from organizations and Individuals, A Civic Service. In forming an athletic- club It la the belief of the Eagles that a con structive civic service can be per formed for the city of Mcdford by providing healthy physical recreation for the youth of the city. The plane, as discussed at the lodge meeting Fri day, are to Issue membership carda to boys between the agea of 18 and 31, after they have algned an applica tion form which will call for living tip to certain regulations which will be imposed. It la expected that the boys will be taught boxing, wrestling, gymnastics and other athletics under the supervision of men In the city qualified to art as Instructors. The club will be conducted entirely under the direction of the local Eagles lodge, who will select the instructors and others who will be used to aee that the club la conducted In a proper and efficient manner. Durham to Aid. Captain O. R. Durham of the Salva tion Army has volunteered his ser Ticea to the committee and his expe rience along these lines will be of Inestimable value In carrying out the purpose for whirh t!.j club will be orRnnLrd. "We believe that our young boya tieed auch a club as we contemplate," stated Mr. Hueston this morn ing, "and If It Is possible for thia athletic club to be established In Hertford, the Eagles will do it." Members of the local Engles were very enthusiastic at the meeting on Friday over thla new activity the club will sponsor and every support will be given Mr. Hueston and the com mittee In bringing about the desired results. Great cure will be tnken when the rlub is finally arranged for. that boys who are .ticking in physical make-up will be given the type of athletics which will build them up physically. Mr. Hues ton states that mnny ex-college ath letes have volunteered already to help out with instruction and it is felt that once the club Is started there Will be no shortage of instructors and supervisors to sec thnt It Is conducted In thn manner for which It Is In- j tended, With a membership of practically 600, the Fables Lodge believes It Is hie not only to organize the club, but to conduct It during the months to come, and with the encounmcment so far received, the committee Is hopeful thnt the club ran be brought1 about within a reasonable time. Shields, who was pastor here for 14 years has come to Med ford to make his home and with Mrs. Shields welcomed many old friends, as well as new ones at the church Sunday morning. R?v. Wm. J. Howell present pastor of the local church will return from his vacation this week and will oc cupy the pulpit Sunday, September 33. A special invitation la extended all former pupils of the Sunday school to attend the service next Sunday. Rally Day Is coming soon and plans for the winter work are under way. Jackson county has reversed the situation effective In the state as a whole with regard to a drastic in crease in traffic accident fatalities during the current year, a check of records at the office of Sheriff Wal ter J. Olmscheld reveal. While fig ures for Oregon show a 26 per cent Increase In auto accident death for the first eight months of thla year as compared to the same period In 1933 there have been only two traffic fatalities In Jackson county up to September 1 thla year, with six re corded for the first eight months of 1933. Local officials and other sponsors of the statewide "Let's Quit Killing" campaign, Including the Parent Teachers American Legion, Oregon State Motor association and other groups, point out, however, that there Is still wide possibility of Im provement of the local accident in Jury and death record. County School Superintendent O. R. Bowman urge motorists to exer cise extra caution In passing schools during the first few weeks of the ses sion, since both children and driver must become accustomed again to observance of school safety rules, sus pended during the summer. Local Parent-Teacher groups will actively participate In the statewide drive to reduce the accident toll by presenting safety talks and programs in schools and by displaying posters warning children against traffic dan gers, It has been announced. Education and enforcement atten tion Is being focused again this week on speeding, while beginning Septem ber 23 a two-week drive against mo torists who violate right-of-way lawa will be instituted. Local and state officers pointed out however, that concentration of enforcement activ ities on a particular phase of traffic law violation Is In no way lessening usual enforcement of the regulations In general. During August 24 persona were killed In Oregon, and 410 Injured, In 1690 traffic accidents according to a report Issued by the secretary of state's office.
