Appendix, I guess." "And what's the plan?" asked Bowers. "Do you leave him here and then go right on to Singapore?" "Shouldn't wonder," said Flint "At least, we will be beading that way, but you can't tell how long an old tub like this will hold together." "I want to get to Singapore In the worst way," said Bowers; "and I am hoping you will have room for me." "Room enough," said Flint "But you'd be too damned uncomfortable." "Between you and me," said Bow- "Let's have a look," be said. That morning McLeod bad not made bis customary change from pyjamas to the usual two-piece suit of white duck, so that his afflicted side was easily bared for elimina tion. Van Reiner's diagnosis was by eye alone. A lump like the end ot ben's egg told him the whole story. He laugbed cheerfully. "You've got at appendix like a rotteu mango," be said. "If we can gel you to the hospital before It bursts, you'll be on your feet again In two weeks." If Instead ot two weeks, Dr. Van Reuter bad said two years, McLeod'a spirits could bardly have been sunk more deeply. His pain was momen tarily forgotten. "Two weeks!" be exclaimed. "Do you know what It costs to teed these beasta for two weeks, to pay the port expenses of the ship for two weeks, and on top of that the bill at tbe hospital? Man, It can't be donel I think I caunot afford to die, and so I come running to you; and what do I get for all my trust and confi dence? You tell me I can't afford to live." TTAVINO diagnosed McLeod'e -1 trouble, Van Reuter almost au tomatically began to prepare an In jection ot morphine. While ha was FOOD PRICES HIT HIGHEST LEVELS IN PAST 3 YEARS WASHINGTON, Aug. 25. (AP) Relief Administrator Hopkins, turning from a six weeks' study of European relief methods, said today he had come reluctantly to the be lief that "we have got to have a cash benefit somewhere In the picture for persons thrown Involuntarily out of work." The administrator said he was firmly convinced that unemployment Insurance must be fitted Into the New Deal. He predicted revival of the Wagner Lewis unemployment Insurance bill which was Introduced In the last congress. It would have levied a fi per cent tax on payrolls to be turned Into an Insurance fund Hopkins said he brought back from Europe four or five definite Ideas to lay before President Roosevelt. He would not discuss their nature. He Indicated that work relief pro jects would be hastened with the approach of cold weather and that the civil workst program, wlch gave temporary Jobs last winter to 4,000, 000 persons, would not be used again. He said he did not believe any forms of unemployed Insurance used In European countries would be workable In the United States. Payne "Your ship looks like Aladdin's palace," ssld Bowers. irs, "I don't believe you know wbat t Is to be uncomfortable. 1 have leen a year In the Jungle. Your ship ooks like Aladdin's palace to me." "Tbls awful smell!" objected riluL "1 like It," said Bowers. ."The fact Is, 1 want to get to Singapore, and I don't care bow 1 get there." "What's so nice about Singapore?" isked Flint "It's the lights," said Bowers, with a quick wink ot one eye. "1 (eel a great need ot lights. Lots and lots ot white lights, and a. sprinkling of red ones. I Invite you to dine with me our first night ashore. Is It a bargain?" "It would be swell," said Flint, and bis enthusiasm was genuine. But tor various reasons be did not wish Harvey Bowers to sail on the Uoldero. Flint knew her to be a doomed ship. He liked Bowers at first sight, but Bowers did not tit Into the schema ot things. He could be nothing but a complication. On the other hand, it tbe port au thorities made a point of It, they would have to give him a berth. Flint and Captain Wong Bo could not af ford to take any stand which might arouse suspicion. A NOUS McLEOD had heard the rasp of the doctor's launch alongside, the approaching voices of Wong Bo and Van Reuter, and their steps along the deck. This, as Is often tbe case with a sick man, distracted him from his pain and gave blm moment's op tlmlsm. With the coming of scientific- help, bis own responsibilities toward himself were ended. "Well," said Van Reuter cheer fully, "what sCcms to be the mat ter T" McLeod, who had been writhing consltlersbly In bis discomfort, and was now lying Oat on bla back, touched bla right side lightly with the tips of bis fingers, and made an attempt to be gallant and bumoroua "Whatever It may be. Doctor," he said, "It Is one of the tew things of which I am possessed, that I would be glad to part with." Van Iteuter emlled In response to McLeod'a mood, and went down on one knee. TAILSPIN TOMMY The Sheriff Isn't Convinced! sponging McLeod's upper arm wltb alcohol, the sick man still further complained. "I was taking the beasts to Singa pore," he said: "and now It looks as If we would all go to hell together." The Jab of the needle Interrupted blm. The point must have touched a nerve, for be gasped and grunted. Van Reuter laughed. "You will be comfortable In Ave minutes," he said. "1 have bearers and a stretcher In the launch. We will rush you to the hospital and j have you on the table In an hour." ! "Is there no other way?" asked McLeod. "Wbat would happen If I refused to be operated on?" 1 "Well." the doctor explained, "the pain would leave you more sud- ' denly than It came. That would 1 mean that your appendix had burst. I Presently a different kind of pain would set In, peritonitis; and yon would be a dead man. It's the ex pense tbat'a worrying you. Why not let your menjgorle go on to Singa pore without you?" It was not only the expense which troubled McLeod. As a matter of fact, be had bad two fortunate years and could well afford It He waa troubled about the animals them selves. They needed expert care and management. He voiced the diffi culty. "There Is no one on the ship." he said, "who knows bow to care for them In one way or another, what with madness and worrying, 1 would lose the lot ot them." "Well," aald Van Reuter, "mayb 1 have got an answor for that." He looked about blm and located Harvey Bowers. There were two tigers In McLeod'a collection, a mala and a female; and Bowers was ex plaining to Flint that the Jungle did not contain two liner specimens. The beasts themselves were mag-nltk-ently undisturbed by the at tention they were receiving. They did not return It. So far as they were concerned, the two men who dis cussed them did not exist. Van Reu tcr called to Bowers. (Crrttkt.
