BEDFORD MAIL TBIBUXE, BEDFORD, OREGON", FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 1934. PAGE NTNTS tir Vast Legions That Darkened Skies In -Years Past Are No More, Sickness Claim ing Thousands of Birds. By CY PLATTES ST. PAUL (Jp) Thundering nhot futia and the phantom-like beating ruatle of win? through, allent air aoon will ilgnal the opening of the nation's waterfowl a won for torn? 3,000.000 hunting enthusiasts. From the Suaquehanna flat In the east to the aalty-tanged blind of toe west coaat and from lalce-atudded area of central North America to Uie wintering grounds of the south, tue cannonade will echo and re-echo. But, Judging from advance reports, the score of this season's shotgun symphony will be different. Hunters familiar with the phrs 'but you should have been here day-be fore-yea terd ay. will hear Its new rerslon, "you should have been here two years ago." See Doom Within Decade Tor those vast leglona of watjr ,fowi that darkened the sky in years past, offering sport to millions on liberal limits and shooting periods are no more. Such Is the opinion of Minnesota conservation authorities, of a atate that has taken the lion's share of the midwest duck flight annually. As for the state's sportsmen, past yeara have taught them lessons on waterfowl decimation, and even the radical assertion of alarmists that waterfowl will be doomed 10 ye.ua hence If the depletion continues, has found credence with many. Conservationists point to 1930 when Minnesota's reports showed more than 1.200.000 ducks and shore birds takan Then they skip to last season and the unsavory figure of 4,450.000 combined bag total. Duck Sickness' In Canada Word from Alberta, the great duck "Incubator" In Canada, holda that botulism or duck sickness has claim ed thousands of birds this summer. Saskatchewan and Manitoba repor: drought, unfavorable breeding cond! tlons, and other adversities thinning the waterfowl ranks. However, it'll be up to the hunter himself to gain first hand Informa tion on the waterfowl situation. One fact remains the total of ducks killed In the United tatea next autumn may make or break one of North America's greatest resources waterfowl., 23's His Jinx. f CLEVELAND (UP) Arthur Haas has no use for the expression, "33 skidoo," any more. Unfortuntely, perhaps, It Is the na ture of Hollywood to romanticize 1 these two extreme situations of life the one symbolizes the eternal I mvstery, the other attainment and ' success. The has-been and the might-have-been are lonely creatures in the film city. They appear gauntly and tim idly like half-shadows on the fringe of ita society. They stand for hours in front of casting offices. Their coats are frayed, their shoes worn. their carriages still erect and pride ful, but there Is a tell-tale pleading in their voices as they ask for work. Lately there has been an Inclina tion to help these people. , During the past few months a number of the nearly forgotten has beens have been given a new hope and Jobs. There waa Charles Ray, who at one time owned one of the largest homes in the film empire, who went through three separate fortunes. He called at a Btudio in shoes that were worn through. He wouldn't admit he ' needed work but the shoes bore mute testimony to his financial straits. But Charlie waa given a minor role in "Ladles Should Listen" and was roundly applauded for his work when the picture was previewed. There waa Virginia Pearson, an- other old favorite. She was found , alone in a one-room shack In the bills, literally starving to death, by ogents of the Motion Picture Relief Fund. Pride hsd kept her from seek- lng aid. i There were other old timers who i dropped nearly to obBcurlty who have been given a helping hand back to success. Jack Mulhall, William Farnum, Helene Chadwlck and Geo. ; Walsh have been working at one atu- dlo recently. Mulhall, who once earned $2000 a week, was doing ex tra work when ha was discovered j and elevated to a "bit" role. DREAM OF 29 YEARS T! HOUSTON. Tex.
