Veterans' Council of Jackson County
will have a large picnic for all vet

HOLLYWOOD (UP) In the years
to come, some enterprising romanti
cist will pause between honoring the
dead and the living-great to me mo
ral! re that category of unfortunates
between the two extremes the has
beens and the might-have-beens.
Unfortuntely, perhaps, It Is the na
ture of Hollywood to romanticize 1
these two extreme situations of life
the one symbolizes the eternal I
mvstery, the other attainment and '
success.
The has-been and the might-have-been
are lonely creatures in the film
city. They appear gauntly and tim
idly like half-shadows on the fringe
of ita society. They stand for hours
in front of casting offices. Their
coats are frayed, their shoes worn.
their carriages still erect and pride
ful, but there Is a tell-tale pleading
in their voices as they ask for work.
Lately there has been an Inclina
tion to help these people. ,
During the past few months a
number of the nearly forgotten has
beens have been given a new hope
and Jobs.
There waa Charles Ray, who at one
time owned one of the largest homes
in the film empire, who went through
three separate fortunes. He called
at a Btudio in shoes that were worn
through. He wouldn't admit he '
needed work but the shoes bore mute
testimony to his financial straits.
But Charlie waa given a minor role
in "Ladles Should Listen" and was
roundly applauded for his work when
the picture was previewed.
There waa Virginia Pearson, an-
other old favorite. She was found ,
alone in a one-room shack In the
bills, literally starving to death, by
ogents of the Motion Picture Relief
Fund. Pride hsd kept her from seek-

There were other old timers who i

have been given a helping hand back
to success. Jack Mulhall, William
Farnum, Helene Chadwlck and Geo. ;

tra work when ha was discovered j

coastal canal between New Orleans

Officials of the Intercoastal Canal
association now are seeking compan
ies, barges and cargoes to use the
waterway.
Colonel E. M. Markham, district
army engineer, has notified the asso
ciation that the canal, which also ex
tends to Corpus Chrlstl, actually will
be ready for commercial use this
month.
