Referring to ft notice to water wen
elsewhere In this paper, Water Sup
erintendent Robert A. Duff had the
following to say:
"It seems to be a trait of some hu
mans to waste when there Is plenty.
This peculiarity Is demonstartod by
some of the citizens of Medford In
the way they abuse the unrestricted
water privileges.
. "On some streets and In some
blocks water runs for hours from
saturated parking strips and lawns
Into the gutters. This water bene
fits no one, and Is an absolute
shameful waste. No doubt these In
dividuals do not realise that they
are hastening the time when the
whole town will be put on meters."
Duff pointed out that many towns
and cities In the country today due
to conditions of drnught have " no
water at all for lawns or gardens and
that domes tlo supplies are being ra
tioned out to some. "How welcome
that water that washes our gutters
would be to these people," he con
tinued. "Perhaps if these people that con
tinually and wantonly waste water
knew of the ImpresHlon that this
practice creates with their neighbors,
their pride at least would doter
tbem."

th money Invested in Oregon by In
surance companies Is In mortgage
loans on city and farm property, rec
ords of Insurance Commissioner A,
H. Averlll showed today.
(Of the $118,638,182 Invested at the
close of 1033, tfi6,O02.1fi was in mort
gage loans.
Next largest Investment, $38,023,866,
was in lnterurban, street railway and
railroad bonds, school, state, road,
municipal and miscellaneous bonds
purchased amounted to $26,133,008,
Life Insurance companies owned
$5,082,682 In real estate.
They had the following Investments
in Oregon: Mortgage loans, $64,803,
$44; lnterurban, street railway and
fallway bonds, $24,800,872; state,
cheel road, municipal and miscel
laneous, $14,880,510.
Fraternal benefit societies had
$7,064,061 Invested. Including $5,838,
062 In state, school, road, municipal
and miscellaneous bonds.

On Saturday afternoon, July 7, a
group of 16 ladles of the auxiliary
of Crater Lake Aerie, p, o, E., Jour
neyed to Grants Pass to witness the
organization of an auxiliary to the
Grants Pass Aerie by State President
D. D. Hale, who signed up a mem
bershlp of 63 charter members.
Local ladles who assisted In the
organ Ira t Ion were: Lula E. Thurston,
M. P.; Bertha Coats, conductor; Mrs.
co. Tucker, Mrs. Oeppert, Catherine
Gillette and Mrs. Shafer.
In the evening, the Mediord mixed
drill team, which received third prize
at the state convention, took part
In a street parade led by the Grouts
Pnss Eagle drum corps. This was
followed by a dance and supper.
Huge Boss Exhibited.
