The union wnnts to sbaorb the three nntlvo terrltorlea of Baautotand, Swaziland and Bechuanaland, which. though within the borders of the union, etill are administered by the British colonial office. The natives, led by their chiefs, arc objecting to the plan. The posi tion of the negroes In the union Is akin to slavery, they assert. The white residents are divided in their opinions as to the transfer. Questions have been asked In the British house of commons on this matter, and J. H. Thomns, secretary of state for dominions, has Indicated that the residents both native and white of the territories concerned will be consulted before any transfer Is made. The main objection of the natives to the transfer Is the existing color bar legislation In the union. By this the negroes are prevented from tak ing up certain occupations In com petition with white men. They also are restricted to their compounds during stated hours, and cannot leave them without a pass from their omployer. THE GRANGE Phoenix Grange. Phoenix Orange met in rcg"" slon July 10.
