Cross-Section of County The Publlo Health service report covers 23 states and the District of Columbia, all that gather complete statistics such as are needed for com. piling the figures, but Is believed to give a roughly accurate cross-section of conditions throughout the country. Nearly 80 million persons, about two- thirds of the population of the nation, live in the territory covered. The death rate, from all cansat, was 10.8 per 1000 popuplatlon ia 1938, as compared to 10.9 In 1932 and 110 In 1931. Three depression years did not serve to send It upward. Total Infant mortality was S8 per 1.000 live births as agal't 60 In 1931, although there was no decrease from 1932. Deaths of mothers In childbirth, however, have droniied steadily, being 6.1 per 1.000 live births in 1931, 5.9 In 1932 and 5.6 in 1933. Diphtheria Down Diphtheria, once one of the heavi est scourges of children, took fewer lives than whooping cough In 1933. Deaths from measles and lethargic encephalitis Increased slightly, and infantile paralysis deaths remained the same as in 1932, although the fig ure, 0.7 per 100.000, was a large drop from 1931, when the rate was 2.0 per 100,000. Almost all the leading causes of death took a smaller toll In 1933 than 1932 except cancer, heart and circu latory diseases, including hardening of the arteries, blocking of arteries1 and veins by clots, high blood pressure and Inflammation of blood vessels. The tuberculosis death rate drop ped as foUows: 1931. 64.8 per 100,000: 1932, 60.4: 1933, 68.4. Diabetes showed a very slight drop In 1933 compared with 1932.
