WASHINGTON W) Anlca'a death
late fell allgntly In 1933, Judging from
figures Just released by the Public
health service, but heart disease, lr--4
eulatory disease and cancer continued
I to take an increasing ton.
Human enduntnce and medical skill
showed a higher percentage of victor
ies than in 1932 over some other Im
portant causes of death, however, In
cluding pneumonia, apoplexy, nervous
diseases, tuberculosis, Influenza, dlph
therla, typhoid fever and deaths In
childbirth.
Cross-Section of County
The Publlo Health service report
covers 23 states and the District of
Columbia, all that gather complete
statistics such as are needed for com.
piling the figures, but Is believed to
give a roughly accurate cross-section
of conditions throughout the country.
Nearly 80 million persons, about two-
thirds of the population of the nation,
live in the territory covered.
The death rate, from all cansat, was
10.8 per 1000 popuplatlon ia 1938, as
compared to 10.9 In 1932 and 110 In
1931. Three depression years did not
serve to send It upward.
Chart of ToU
The toll taken by several leading
causes of death, per 100,000 popula
atlon. In 1933 as compared with the
two previous years was:

Both children and mothers
have a slightly better chance of sur
vival at the time of birth than In
1932. the figures show. Total Infant
mortality was S8 per 1.000 live births
as agal't 60 In 1931, although there
was no decrease from 1932. Deaths of
mothers In childbirth, however, have
droniied steadily, being 6.1 per 1.000
live births in 1931, 5.9 In 1932 and 5.6
in 1933.
Diphtheria Down
Diphtheria, once one of the heavi
est scourges of children, took fewer
lives than whooping cough In 1933.
Deaths from measles and lethargic
encephalitis Increased slightly, and
infantile paralysis deaths remained
the same as in 1932, although the fig
ure, 0.7 per 100.000, was a large drop
from 1931, when the rate was 2.0 per
100,000.
Almost all the leading causes of
death took a smaller toll In 1933 than
1932 except cancer, heart and circu
latory diseases, including hardening of
the arteries, blocking of arteries1 and
veins by clots, high blood pressure and
Inflammation of blood vessels.
The tuberculosis death rate drop
ped as foUows: 1931. 64.8 per 100,000:
1932, 60.4: 1933, 68.4. Diabetes showed
a very slight drop In 1933 compared
with 1932.
