The Consolidated Mining corporation baa begun the construction of what may develop Into the first unit of an enormous sold dredging operation on the lower Rogue. Having leased from the MacLeay Estate company, on a royalty basis, such of Its holdings as are on tidewater, the Consolidated people have under construction a barge on which will be mounted a pump having a capacity of about 1400 cubic yards of sand per day. nils sand will be processed for the recov ery of gold and, If It shows a reason able amount of color, the company proposes to add five or six more dredges having a capacity of about three times the one now being bunt. This first unit should be operating within five or six weeks, according to the officials, j. s. waybrlght, mining engineor. and James R. Sellers, engineer, both of Los Angeles, are here supervising the initial work. It Is proposed to use this smaller outfit to assay the hold ings. The tend leased from MacLeay ex tends from near the hole at the lower end of what la known as Canfleld riffle to the sea front and Includes thousands of acres of ground and two large Islands. K. Peden of New York, eye. ear. ncse and throat specialist, has an nounced the official opening of his new offices, located at 419 Medford building, for Monday, May 14. Mia Iris Tucker, a former assistant in the office of the late Dr. J. J. Emmens. will assist Dr. Peden. Some of the newest, medical equip ment has been ordered for the of fices, and ta expected to arrive within the next few days, and office furni ture is to be installed immediately. Dr. Peden expected to become as sociated with the lat Dr. Emmens, but arrived In this city on the day that word waa received of his death. The specialist was born at Osceola, Missouri, and attended the University of Missouri before coming to the far west, where he graduated from the University of Washington and the University of Oregon Medical acnooi, Dr. Peden specialized at the Univer sity of Pennsylvania and in New York City before coming to Medford. n passing sentence said, "X find this s an aggravated case." Plater admitted his guilt. He as saulted two workers, near the fair grounds, one night lo days ago. Plater has no previous bad record. His commanding officers reported he Is the type that Is always late." The state parole board yesterday revoked the parole of Ira Bslley, and ordered his return to the Salem prison. He was recently Involved in a gasoline theft episode. The dis trict attorney's office described him as "one of our bad boys." LION MAN' STAR OF COLLEGE FILM The "Lion Man" that's what they call Buster Crabbe, Olympte swim ming star and screen actor, who, with Mary Carlisle, heads the cast of "Sweethear of Sigma Chi," modern story of college life, which Is now playing at the Studio theater. Buster won the name honestly, Engaged to tmpersnate the "Lion Man" In "King of the Jungle," he made friends with a number of beasts he had to work with. T Ival Leonard Flstei, a CCC private from Plains. Illinois, entered a plea of euilty to attempted assault with Intent to commit robbery, and was yesterday sentenced to serve an ln riAtArmin&te term of two years in state prison. Fields, 81. and a resi dent here for the past SO years, pass ed away at 3 p. m. Thursday at his home in the Gruiln ereeit section Mr. Fields has not been well; however, death was sudden and unexpected. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. February 7, 1853, and in that atate was married to Mary McMillan and in 1898 the family came west and settled In Union county, Oregon, where he resided until coming to Jackson county 30 years ago. He has been a member of the Christian church for many years. Out of a family of six children, two daughters survive, Ethel Meadows and Minnie Crowl, both of Medford Also 1 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the concer chapel at 3:30 Saturday, with Rev. w. R. Bslrd officiating.
