1HEDF0RD MAIL TRIBUXE. MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1934. I EOF G. 0. P. Elects 84 to Princi- pal Stale Offices and to Congress, While Only 44 Democrats Make Grade By VIrcll IMnklry (United press Staff Correspondent) STATB HOUSE, Salem, Ore. (UP) Republicans lve been elected eighty four times to the six principal state offices and as federal senators and representatives compared with 44 Democrats, a survey showed today. In the early days of Oregon's state hood Democrats held a majority of the offices. Oregon's first governor, secretary of state, treasurer, attorney general, superintendent of public Instruction and senators and representstlves were all Democrats. Few Dems Since 1881, . The first five representatives elect ed to oongress were Democrats. Since 1881, however, only three Democrats, Elton Watklns, Walter Pierce and Charles H. Martin, novo been elected. From 1881 until 1023 no Democrat was successful In winning a congres' atonal seat. The flrat congressional district has always been represented by Republl cans, This fact will prove an Interest ing point In the final race between Devera-Mott campaigns. Sloven Republicans have been elect ed governor against eight Democrats. Only one Independent, Julius L. Meier, has been elected. Four gov ernors were re-elected. Since statehood only two Democrats have won the secretary of etate of fice, but In territorial days all four aecretarlea of state were Democrats. a l), P.; J Denis In Treasury. . . Republicans have been elected atate treasurers nine times, compared to five Democrats. Thomas B. Kay, Re publican, served the longest time In office, January 4, 1011, to January 6, 1B10. and January 4, 1025, until April 39. 1631, When he died. . Five Republicans have served as attorney genersl. Only one Democrat has held the office; I. H. Van Winkle, Incumbent, waa appointed to succeed Oeorje M. Brown, was elected and has been re-elected three times. . Two Demoorats and eight Republi cans have served as superintendents of publto Instruction. The state has had only two commis sioners of labor, both Republicans, O. P. Huff served from January 1, 1903. until January 8, 1019, when, O. , H. Oram, now a candidate for re election, began his term of office. 18 to 12 Hcnate Itntlo. Oregon has sent 13 Demoorats and 16 Republicans to the senate. Charles L. McNsry, Republican, Is serving the longest consecutive term, which be gan May 90, 1017, Republican representatives number 34, against 14 Demoorats. W. O. Haw ley served the longest consecutive term in the lower house, March, 4, 1007, to March 3, 1033. Democrata are hopeful of winning a majority of suite and federal offices this year. To date little effort has been spent by the Democrat to se cure a strong candidate for secretary of state. ' Those who preach the policies of Jackson, Jefferson, Wilson and Frank lin Roosevelt also are searching for a man who can win the seat now held by Martin, who Is running for gov ernor. Democratic chieftains sra cognisant Tyro at Ten Pins ' Bowls And Bowls But Gets No Pay OKLAHOMA CITY (P) He was a serious young man. Inquiring, "Can you give me an alley?" The young man bowled and bowled, un til finally Williams warned him his muscles might complain next day. Wearily, with a sigh of relief, the youth desisted, but made no move to leave. "Haven't you forgotten some thing?" Williams finally asked. "dueas so," the youth replied. "Can you pay me now so's I can home?'"
