MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 1934. PAGE FIVE SEA CREATURES TO BE STUDIED AT W DEPTHS Scientist Develops 'Diving Ball' Capable of With standing Pressure Nearly Half Mile Under Surface WASHINGTON, D. C. (Spl.) Con tinuation next aummer of the unique deep-aea Investigations of Dr. William Seeze under a grant of funds by the National Geographic society of Wash- fnrrtnn hn hofn announced bv Dr. Gilbert Grosvenor, president of the society. Dr. Beebe, who la director ol the department of scientific research of the New York Zoological society, and a noted oceanographlc naturalist, has developed during the last few years an entirely new method of undersea Investigation which permits men to descend 6alely to depths which hitherto couW not be reached. Will Descend In Two-Ton Diving Ball. Accompanied by an assistant, Dr. Beebe plans to descend to a depth of nearly half a mile below the surface of the sea Inside the heavy steel ball (the "Bathysphere" In which he has previously made the record descent for a living man 2200 feet. The unique diving ball Is familiar to mil lions of Americans who saw It last summer and fall when It was on ex hibit In the central room of the hall of science at the Century of Progress Exposition In Chicago. It Is a thick-shelled sphere four-and-a-half feet In diameter and weighing two tons. It has windows of fused quartz fashioned to wlth atand the many tons of pressure to which it la subjected by the sea water. Through the wlndowa beams of light are sent out Into the water and the strange creaturea of the ocean depths are observed. A steel cable lowera the sphere from a barge at the sur face and rubber-enclosed wires af ford telephone communication and electrlo light. No Air Tubes to Surface. Furnishing air from the surface to the great depths reached by the bathysphere Is Impracticable. The observers are sealed into the ball, and an automatio valve ateadlly releases a supply of oxygan. Chemlcala ex posed In racks absorb moisture and carbon dioxide. At the end of the dive the observers are living In an atmosphere of slightly compressed air. During Dr. Beebe's descents In 1930 and 1032 a number of forms of sea life not known before were discovered. Many of the atrange creatures were found to possess glowing and flash ing light organs which help them In their battle for life In the depths to which no sunlight ever penetrates. Dr. Beebe expects to add many new discoveries this year, and with the aid of additional and new apparatus, It Is hoped to prolong the dives to four and even five houra In order that detailed observations can be made on the wholly unknown activi ties and habits of deep sea creatures. As to the possibilities for pushing farther into the sea depths, he has written: "Next to going to Mars, there seems nothing more exciting and unpredictable." In the past, the deep sea diving in vestigations have been carried on from laboratories made available by the British government on tiny Nonsuch Island, of the Bermudas. This Islet has rocently bet-n set aside for a gov ernment school, but this development will not in any way hamper the new expedition. It will make Its head quarters on the mainland near Non such at Dr. Beebe's new, perfectly equipped .laboratory near the Ber muda biological station, and will carry on Its underwater Investigation In the aame area used In past years. The work will start early In July. Slated For Job Senator Bone and Dill of Wash ington have recommended A. J. Chltty (above), publisher of 8he. ton, for the post of United State! marshal for western Washington. (Associated Press Photo! OF GREEK ARTS RESEARCH GOAL Ancient Cultures Traced in Effort to Prove Nazi Idea That Civilization Took Root in Nordic Soil mania history, usages, etc., going back to 3193 B. C. This book, which was first spoken of In Holland about 60 years ago, was re-edltd by Prof. Hermann Wlrth, whose theories of the nordlo origin of everything that Is worth while, now are being widely accepted lb nazl circles. Four professors of the German In stitute of Breslau university have issued a signed statement, confirm ing an earlier pronouncement by leading Dutch savants, that the Oera Linda Book Is a fake. The statement says in part: "Now that all classes, we are happy to ob serve, are manifesting enthusiastic Interest In the ancient Germanle Ideals, we must take care that these national Ideals shall not be blem ished or made ridiculous abroad by such forgeries." By A. J. BOUMAX BERLIN. ( AP) Learned German professors, vying with each other tOj find, scientific basts for the nasi idea that civilisation had Its roots in nor dlo soli, are tracing ancient cultures to Germanic origins. Time-honored theories are being thrown overboard. The old belief that mankind spread, outward from Asia has been discarded by many of them as a fable. Instead, Prof. Carl Sohuchhardt, noted Berlin acraeologist, claims It was the Germanic migration from northern Europe that founded the Mycenaean culture In ancient Greece as far back as 2000 B. O. In the scientific perodlcal For schungen u nd Fortschritte (Re search and Progress) Professor Schuchhardt used a wealth of de tail to support his theory. He declared that the old Achalans built square houses similar to those of the northern Germans. The Oreek besiegers of Troy used much the same fighting methods as did these ancient Germans, and Homer's con ception of the Realm of Shades is purely nordlc, he 'claimed. Heathen Germans Lauded The virtues of the heathen Ger mans are frequently held up to emu lation. That they were by no means bar barians, but highly civilized people even according to the newest Ideas, is claimed by Prof. Gustav Neckel. "They were," he writes, "unspoiled by delusions about all men being equal and free from false notions about materialism and idealism. "The leadership principle with them waa the dominant feature, far remote from the oriental notion of kings and emperors ruling 'by the grace of God.' Baron Eudard von der Heydt, prominent banker and ethnologist, lecturing on early Germanic history, even traced a connection of old Ger man art with central Aalatlo and early Chinese art. Book Held Forgery Hot controversy among savants has been stirred up over the so-called Oera Linda Book, otherwise known as the Frisian Bible, supposed to con tain ancient chronicles of old Ger- t)ore Spent 915,965, SEATTLE, March 22. THE fruit grower of the Pacifio Northwest, after experiencing: a substantial improvement in the sales prices of his commodities, looks back with regret upon his disastrous exper ience with spray programs which re sulted in a material reduction of his pack out because of worm damage. The lack of control meant the loss of hun dreds of thousands of dollars to each community in addition to the expense of valiant effort to curtail this loss. The experience is too fresh in the mem ory of every grower to encourage its repetition. Therefore, growers will un questionably prefer to use standard products such as Sherwin-Williams Arsenate of Lead and Sherwin-Williams Summer Mulsion rather than take a chance with materials which in then personal experience are unknown in value. ( Sherwin-Williams Arsenate of Lead (manufactured by the largest manu facturer of spray materials in the world) is not an experiment and it is not a product concerning which there need be any question in the minds of any as to its effectiveness. Maximum Toxicity In the research work done by the Sherwin-Williams Company in actual orchard practice and in the laboratories, Sherwin-Williams Arsenate of Lead properly applied produced almost instantaneous results, hundreds of newly hatched larvae being found dead on the surface of the fruit, resulting in a very small percentage of stings and worm entries. These tests involved the counting of several hundred thousand fruits. Hun dreds of growers obtained maximum control during 1933 with two and three cover sprays, suffering- an exceedingly small percentage of worm damage, yet in many instances saving from one-third to one-half of their spray bill. With a record such as this should you gamble with your apple or pear crop? In fact there is no need to gamble with your spray dollar; no need to try spray programs or spray materials which are unsupported as to results through uni versal usage and universal control. There is a Sherwin-Williams Horticul tural Advisor near you. He will gladly cooperate In suggesting an effective and yet economical spray program.
