TOYERY EXTENDS SCOPE FDR 1934 NEW YORK - (UP) "Educational tova for every child every day In 1934." That's the slogan of New York's "Toyery." a unique lending library for playthings that la turning Santa. CI a us into a dally commuter Instead o t a once-a-year visitor to the home of underprivileged children. The Toyery was organized by Dr. H. Harold Axworthy, director of New York University's Bureau of Com munity Service, and Mrs. Ida Cash, a veteran probation officer, who waa distressed at the numbers of chil dren arrested for stealing toys. Starting as an experiment in New York University's Community House, the plan provided poor youngsters with educational playthings for home use. Just the way lending libraries make good books available for every one. More than 3,000 children re sponded to the first announcement. A disinfecting system was Installed to Insure sanitary playthings. Each youngster waa permitted to take one toy at a time and was carefully ln atructed In Its educational usea. When the child brought back his plaything, ha was permitted to draw out another suitable to his age and capabilities. ' Communications To the Editor: Mr. George S. Barton has an arti cle in the Portland Journal under date of March 1st. He heaps con siderable criticism upon the legisla tors who passed the sales tax bill for school and property relief. Mr, Barton Uvea In Medford. Ha rates aa a mlnlr.g man. Inquiry at the sheriff's office re veals the fact that he la not, a tax payer in this county. The records In the school superintendent's office show that ,he has six children In our -public schools, and that the costs of educating them la 880 each, or 480 per year, which cost ts now borne wholly by his neighbors. It was Just to give men situated like Mr. Barton a chance to contrib ute a few cents to education that the sales tax waa passed. X am not contending that each man should pay the full cost of edu cating his own children, but In a de mocracy such as ours. It la right and proper that each man should con tribute a little something, be It ever so smsll, towsrd the cost of govern ment and especlslly the schools. The sales tax to which Mr. Barton seems so violently opposed may cost him from 87.B0 to 810.00 per year, but In return for It he gets 1480.00 worth of education for children. What right has he to ask any mora than that? . Our public school system Is now In a bsd way. It la on the verge of closing. . If the school relief bill falls some of It may close. Suppose It does close and the school board la forced to open schools next fall on a tuition basis If they open at all. Mr. Barton may yet find that he got what he voted for. P. W. TAYLOR. 339 8. Central Street, Medford, Ore. - Federal funds amounting to $1B, 400 were allotted to finance a round up of several thousand snowahoe rab bits in the vicinity or Anchorage, Alaska, for transfer to Kodlak snd other tsisnda for stocking purposes.
