We never did get to tbe top ol the pyra mid. I grabbed a gun from one ot tbe guards ... I used It "I thought I saw the ahkln go down, but I couldn't be sure. Any way the gun was empty, and I ran to the edge of tbe cenote. "I'm not much ot a swimmer, you know, but I thought I'd rathe' drown than be cut up. So I Jumped over tbe edge. "Funny: In tailing I thought how curious It was that I still bung on to my bottle through the excite ment . . . Frank I think It was a break that they found that bottle but greater yet was the fact that It got to sea from here!" He arose and limped back and forth before the Are. Talking rapid ly, almost to himself, be said, "We can't get up the cliffs. It would take weeks to make a rope. We might cut down palm trees. Make a ladder tbat'd reach to the top. "But it might not work. If we did let to tbe top it would take weeks to out through the jungle to the coast. Too long. The rains will be here: soon again " Frank Interrupted him. "Janice looks a little sleepy. How about. get ting a little rest, Janlcef Billy and I will cbln awhile, then turn In our elves." They over-ruled the girl's protest. Lang ton hobbled Into the small aback after them and pointed out a net hammock he said he'd made from cactus fiber. "It's not the Wal dorf type," he salS with a wry smile, "but It's comfortable. The deer skins mell a little but they're warm." Janice laughed at bis apology. "1 think It's a lovely bed." She stifled a small yawn and gave them sleepy good night. shore and dipped up fresh water out ot the sea. Rivers In this country did tunnel under the beaches and discharge from holes In the ocean bottom. A pop bottle had survived It but could a living, breathing man? He sighed and shrugged his shoulders. He sald sottly: "As you say, It's a chance that must be taken. We must try every possible device before the rains tome. You put up a good argument, Billy, but I think you and Janice stay here." The paralysed figure of the head priest made a sound. As of one ao- ACK again before the Are, Ora- hame looked somberly at Lang B ton. "I noticed," h said, "that your Ore was chiefly driftwood. Also that your driftwood comes from about ha hlcheat level on this little hill.' "You've seen that, too," Langton replied. "Well, old man, I'll tell you the worst. All It takes Is Just one heavy storm and a flooded stream to wipe us all out. "I've thought about It until would get a little nutty. I've thought of building a raft, and when this valley becomes a big batb tub, I'd float until the water went down. It might work, but I believed getting out by way ot the cliffs was tbe lesser evil and got cracked up do lng It. "I thought ot building a smaller raft and floating down tbe stream through the caverns '.o the sea, but I couldn't be sure ot getting there. "Even now, bow could I be sure that a man floating or a raft could get through. A pop bottle is one thing, a man Is anothei Frank said grimly, "It's a chance that will bave to be taken by one ot us. You don't swim well. Fortunate ly, I da So I think I'll elect myself. LAngton looked at bim curiously, "You re a good scout, Frank. But can't let you do It." For the first time Frank realized the trace of bit terness that underlay Billy Lang- tons gay humor. - He continued, "I'm only half man now, Frank. It doesn't matter what happens to me. I'll make balsa-wood Jacket It's lighter than cork and do all the floating out there's to be done. "You're strong and resourceful, Miss Kent's chances would be Im proved It you remained behind to make ropes, or ladders, or rails In case . . . well, bluntly, In case thli stream ends below a swamp and seeps upward, or worse, ends In a hole In the ocean floor." FRANK threw a chip Into the flro " and watched the small flame with thoughtful glance. He remem bared the trip In tbe launch with Ortega ind his two crewsmen. Was it Imagination or the flicker ing light and shadow from the fire! . . . but the hlgb-prlest's eyes held a queer mocking light, thought Frank. Although the man's face was Impassive, and his body Immobile and usolcsa, nevertheless he still was Improsslve with an intangible powor. It was as It ha alone, of the four In this remote valley, had some knowledge hidden from them. And that knowledge gave him mastery of the fates of his companions. In the daya that followed, Frank and bis machete were Indefatigable. In tbe Interval ot day between the sudden eruption of tropic dawn over the Jungle above them and the quick cloak ot darkness that descended at sunset, all bu.Med themsolves at their varied tasks. Frank chopped and stripped ol their thorns bales ot long leaved cactus. Janice pounded and soaked them In water, and put the fiber In the sun to dry. They would have plenty ot rope for their varied ex periment to win to snfoty. He col lected timbers ot driftwood and split them to make a frame tor bis raft, and poles and rungs for lad ders.
