PAflE TTTREE Society and Clubs Edited by Eva Nealon Hamilton Firestone Officials Inspect Leonard's Station States Banquet, Large Event of Friday Evening , In the banquet hall of th Metho dist Episcopal church, decked with flags and festoons, former resident of all states of the union gathered Fri day night for the ninth annual states banquet of the church. Tables arranged to represent the various states were beautifully decor ated in flowers, greens and lighted candles. Fine china and silver were brought out by the women of the church for the occasion and a pleas ing arrangement greeted all. guests. Mrs. Susan Campbell was toaat mis tress for the evening and gave an original poem, which was dramatized to represent the habits of peoples from all sections of the nation. The male quartet, composed of C. A. Meeker, Dr. E. W. Shockley. Dr. W. W. Howard and A. J. McDonough, entertained with two numbers, which were much enjoyed, Toatsts were given to the various states by G. E. Gates, Rev. Joseph Knotts, Frank Van Dyke, Dwtght Flndley and A. W. Pipes The southern states were represent ed In a clever skit. Miss Ellow Mae Wilson entertained with two whist ling solos and the program closed with community singing. Mrs. A. S will hold an Interesting meeting Monday eve ning, February 5, at which time the members will honor the associate grand matron of Oregon, Mrs. Edith Phillips, deputy to the grand matron. All members and visiting are Invited to the meeting. Garden Club Hears Interesting Talk On Oregon Birds The Medford Garden club held Its regular monthly meeting Thursday evening when Mr. Ethel Wllllts gave an Interesting talk on blrda and their nesta. Mrs. Willlta haa always been a keen observer ot plant and bird life and gave many personal experiences connected with her atudlea ot the Oregon birds and their habits. The president. Mrs. T. W. Mtlea announced the appointment of Mra. Curtis Darby as recording secretary and of Mra. R. O. Fowler as corresponding secretary. There Is still an urgent demand for shrubs and trees for the proposed planting of the court house grounds, and those who can make donations are asked to call Mrs. Mllea aa early as possible. The city authorities have asked the Garden club to furnish planta and supervise the planting of the new rock gnrden along the creek south of the bridge. If any one haa rock planta to donate for this project she la asked to call Mra. Miles as this rock garden la much larger than the former one arid many new planta will be needed. If this mild weather continues Mrs. Bundy. chairman of the plant sales committee, announced that the first plant sale will be held the last of this month. . Every one whether a member of the garden club or not Is asked not to destroy any plants, but to neei tnem In and save them for this sale. Any one having such plants Is asked to call Mrs. Spllver, 881-Y and me committee will send for such plants Just before the sale. There Is going to be a greater de mand thle year than ever before tor plants of all kinds and co-operation on the part of every one who la planting seeds or transplanting per ennial will do a great deal toward making Medford a more beautiful city. They carried velvet and crepe muffs with shower spraya of violas. Is planning to return to Medford for the summer and will probably sail on the President Wilson from Hilo, June 20. She will be guest In Medford of her father. Dr. W. H. Heckman and Mrs. Heckman at their home In Corning Court. It haa been two years since she spent a summer in Medford and her arrival will bs much anticipated by friends, .as well as relatives. Past Matron Club Richard Roberts Is Named Alternate Richard S. Roberta, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Roberts of Medford, received a telegram Saturday from United States Senator Charles L. Mc Nary, which stated: "As a result of recently held competitive West Point examination, I am naming you as first alternate to Frank Dickson Mil ler, principal." Roberts was graduated from Med ford high school In 1933, and Is now taking a Junior college course at the Southern Oregon Normal school.
