The Smithsonian and the Feabody people believe they're there but have never gone after them. "They've got plenty to do with what they've already found. The Mexicans won't look for 'em, and there's a good reason why. The In dians in Qulntana Itoo don't like Mexicans, even though they are Mexican cltliens themselves. That's amusing. There's been companies ot Mex soldiers cut up trying to get through that Jungle, and they never did succeed. "I've often thought," he oon- ' eluded, "that there's something dam' Interestln' "In that place ' something a white man would like 'to see they're so dam' anxious to 'keep 'em out I" ON A Ward liner, sailing south out of Vera Crus, Orahama thought ot these things. The phrase ."something interesting . . , some thing a white man would like to see" kept forming and recurring In 1 his mind, like a bright motto en graved upon a knight's escutcheon. Frank supposed that the flrst qualification of every adventurer was curiosity. Curiosity to see what waa on the other side of the fence, the other side of the hill, the other side of ihe world. This inquisltiveness was as much a psrt of him as his limbs: it was the basic mental equipment ot those - who devoted their lives to research ot any kino; It sent savants to their laboratories as well as farm lads down to their ships. While his heart was sore, he resi tted that It as not Janice Kent who had sent him south. She bad simply provided the stimulus by denying him herself and the type - ot life thst waa hers. She had been tbe stimulus; the discovery ot BUI Langton's fate waa the objective. Frank's philosophy of existence was not elaborate. One simply In He had regained In an expedition back ot Caracas in search ot gold and emeralds. So, while his memory ot Janice was not dimmed, nor the lonely sensation gone from him, It was with some nev stirring ot anticipa tion that he arose, dressed, and left bis cabin to the sound ot the ship's cables running through the hawse oles. . His hip had brought him to the point where be Jumped off Into tha unknown. ' j DON Raoul Ortega Rljon y Men don had dined well. He felt very comfortable with the world. At least the soul ot one halt- I grown chicken had sped, and quan tities ot rice had been, boiled to make his dish 0! polio y arros. At the moment this concoction was swimming contentedly In a liter ol wine, docanted, so the proprletot ot the place had assured him, from a Spanish cask Just through the cus toms the day before. He leaned against tbe doorway ot the restaurant, savoring tha last pleasures of the meal when a little black dog rcampered around tha corner of tha street and galloped through the dust toward Don RaouL It was evident that the dog would pass the gentleman at a distance of about five yards. Don Raoul drew his revolver from his belt Ha cocked and leveled It , at the loping dog and pressed tha trigger. The report and the yelp ot the little animal broke the still ness of the sleepy street. The dog squirmed In the dust, and began to crawl back to the corner from which It came. Don Raoul, In the act of replacing his revolver, made a lilss'ng noise ot selt re proach, and aimed and fired again. Tha dog quivered and lay still. Tha man nodded thoughtfully, yet with evident satisfaction, and pushed the revolver Into Its holster, His shoulders straightened. His eyes darted up and down tbe street swiftly to see If any bad witnessed bis lapse In marksmanship. Ha sighed, and lighting a black clgaret strolled down the street toward the freight wharves.
