Attend Annual Dinner Mr. and Mra. J. C. Woods of Medford were among local people attending the an nual W. R. C. Installation dinner at Central Point Saturday. Mr. Woods Is a Civil war veteran. Returns to Portland Mrs. Floyd Cook of Portland, who was In Medford last week for the Winifred Warner Maxwell Becker wedding January 1. left Saturday forenoon on the Shasta for her home In the north. In Klamath Falls Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pruttt were visitors in Klamath Falls Friday evening, and Invited . the Klamath Elks' bowling team to come to Mefdord January 14 for a match with the Medford Elks' team. On Business Visit Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Lewis of prospect were bualness visitors in Medford Saturday. Lewis brothers operate the sawmill at Pros pect, where they cut only sugar pine. The mill has been closed down for the winter. Canfleld In Medford Chief Ranger David H. Canfleld of Crater Lake Na tional park, who makes his headquar ters In Klamath Falla waa a visitor in Medford Saturday, and reported that up to the first of the year, there was M Inches of snow In the park. For the same period the preceding year, 118 Inches waa recorded. Mr. Canfleld stat ed there was much rainfall thla year, causing the anow depth to be leas than In other years. There has been 16 feet of snowfall this season, In com parison with 20 last season. He waa accompanied to Medford by Mrs. Canfleld. Cuthbert, a man univer sally recognized for his success in planting and landscaping public grounds, came here at the request of Mrs. Reames when she was presi dent of the Garden club, and as sisted in the selection of shrubbery for the court house grounds. In making the selection tne following things were taken Into consideration: climate, the natural surroundings of trees and shrubs and mapping out the grounds in detail. Mr. Cuthbert co-operated with the county court In establishing the un derground sprinkling system, placing the heads in relation to the pro posed trees and shrubs. The county court has expressed the desire to preserve the result of this work and to take advantage of t.he opportunity that has been of fered Jackson county to so beautify the court house grounds, that they may be a fitting adornment to the building. The county court also feels Justified In calling upon the citizens to contribute liberally to the pur chase of this shrubbery. The plans for the planting, Mrs. Reames stated yesterday, have been carefully prepared by the architect so that It is possible for civic groups or Individuals to undertake to sup ply separate portions of these shrubs and trees and to aid In this work. The architect has submitted a com plete list and names for each section of the planting. Estimates are avlnl able so that groups or individuals may ascertain the cost of the trees or shrubs which they wish to fur nish. ' ' The citizens generally will be In terested In seeing this work done, but they should realize, Mrs Reames plonted out, that It cannot be done without organization. The county court has therefore asked the Med ford Garden club to continue its ef forts and secure thla shrubbery In time for late fall and early spring planting, which must begin soon. Those Interested In aiding should communicate with Mrs. T. W. Miles, TJ. 8. department of agriculture and president club. of the Medford Garden ' the extension service of Oregon State college. The work will be under the direc tion of Jack Stuart Knapp of the National Recreation association. Mr. 1 Knapp Is well known In Jackson county, having conducted a similar institute here two yenrs ago. The purpose of this Institute Is to train leaders to promote and direct dramatics and recreational activities In the various rural organizations of the county. The enrollment of the school Is limited to 60 leaders. Forty representing Jackson county and 20 from Josephine county. There should be two leaders representing each or ganization enrolled. It Is desirable to have an equal number of men and women. Boys and girls who are unemployed at the present time and who are out of school are also invited to attend the institute. Any orgsniration in terested In dramatics U asked to call the home demonstration agent for further details. There Is no charge for this leadership training, however, to attend all four sessions and to pro mote the direct dramatics work In their own organisations. E Dr. Phillips will have associated with him. Mrs. Phillips who Is a gr eq uate bacteriologist with hospital ex perience and together they contem- I plate establishing a laboratory for x-ray examinations, etc. At the present time Dr. Phillips is established at the Humane society's shelter where he will remain until I he has completely renovated and. equipped the hospital on the hls'r. way as a modem institution. The Jackson County Humane so ciety have secured the veterinary ser vices of Dr. S. E. Phillips to take charge of their shelter on Table Rock road and the veterinary hospital on the premises formerly occupied by Dr. Stone, across the highway from Beck's bakery. Dr. Phillips has been selected from a large number of applicants lor this location due to hts special fitness for the work. He Is a post graduate of the Washington State college at Pullman where he secured his bachelor degree and has had a broad experience hand- all leaders who are enrolled are asked nng small animals.
