For the first time In history a state has abolished state taxes on real estate and per sonal property by substituting a gen eral sales tax. The state tax com mission of Illinois has voted to do this because of the sizeable returns from the state general sales tax of two per cent. The sales tax became effective last July. The Income for the first six months was devoted to relief of the needy and unemployed. Effective, January 1, 1934, the Income will re main In the general fund. The an nual Income derived from the sales tax is estimated at 936,000,000. The now step reduces taxes on real estate and personal property from seven to nineteen per cent and avoids & tax Increase. Other states that have sales tax lawa are Mississippi, Michigan, Indi ana, New York, Arizona. North Da kota, Utah, North Carolina, West Virginia, California and Wnshlngton. In most cases the sales tax has elim inated the need for Increased prop erty taxes. The plsne's course was roughly along the 118th meridian, and the flight extended 150 miles south of the flagship. On his return, Byrd reported: "No land. The sea-borne Ice continued to the limit of vision." (AP) Bankera and government officials completed preparations today for the flotation of a treasury loan of 4,000,000,000 lira (approximately 9320,000,000) to re tire the long-term treasury bonds due this year.
