Nearly a hundred whlaky ships, the greatest number since 1924. are ly ing at anchor In the Atlantic ocean, ready to ruah their cargoea of "boot teg" liquor Into seaboard cities as soon as the states ratify repeal. Thla situation was disclosed by a government Investigator, who has been making a survey of conditions here. A year ago. according to the agent, there were scarcely a dozen ships along "Rum Row." Now the num ber Is nearer 100, and Increasing. The ships, he said, are loaded with fine whiskies from St. Pierre. Mlquelon, Blmlnl and the Bahamas. Most of them are propelled by four Liberty motors and will travel 40 mllea an hour, or better, loaded. Their sides are ateel plated as a protection against coast guard bulteta. The plan of the bootleggers la to undersell legitimate distributors. By purchasing liquor in vast quantltiea st from 810 to 814 a case, they fig. ure to undersell licensed distilleries by 26 to 50 per cent. Coast guardsmen here say that the depression has been a boon to the liquor syndicated. Bootleggers have been able to buy swanky yachts from formerly wealthy people. The boot. leggera themselves dress In flannels, blue coats and yatching caps, and Idle beneath striped awnings on the decks as they convey their contraband car goes from the 12-mlle limit. "I don't know when I've met so many yachtsmen In the bootlegging business. ' one coast guardsman said. "In the old days they all said they knew Andy Mellon 'my friend Andy,' they called him. But now It's Roose velt who's their pal." Find Prehistoric Rhinoceros. HEALY, Kan. MEDICAL WORLD CHEERFUL OVER PROGRESS MADE Assembly Discusses Ills Of Human Race Messages Of Hope And Dire Warn ings Issued For Layman. (United Free Staff Correspondent) CLEVELAND (UP) Message of hope for the infirm and dire warn ings for the seemingly healthy lay man were mingled strangely when leading medical men of America and Europe met here for the Interna tlonal Assembly of the Interstate Postgraduate Medical association of North America. Tor six dave and nlghta leading physicians and surgeons told of the things that can go wrong with the human machine, until the average layman must have pondered how the human race manages to exist. -Advanced Treatment Almost In the same breath, these medical men told of the advancea being made In treating every sort of disease, from cancer to measles. Lung spec la Hit a told of the thing that can go wrong with the respir atory system; heart specialists cata logued the heart diseases; kidney specialist, akin specialists, nerve specialist and stomach specialist warned of the variety of ailments to which the average citizen la aus ceptlble. Then they turned about and told of their experiment in the labora tory, in the hospital, in the home which have enabled them to re duce the death rate from almost every known disease or affliction. Nothing to Worry Over The sum total of the message inese medical authorities would leave with the layman t that he need not worry, although disease and dis aster surround him on every aide. Nature has " supplied the human mechanism with marvelous . auto matic protective devlcea and man must remember only to be moder ate in everything. Enough, but not too much, food; reasonable amounts of fresh air and. sieep; enough work to keep reason ably occupied: enough play to keep reasonably care-free these are the chief needs of the average person who would remain healthy. Speakers emphasised the necessity of treating diseases quickly, point ing out that ailments which would prove fatal if allowed to run thslr course, can be cured by early treat ment.
