Oct. lfl. (Jft The New York mayoralty campaign roared Into Its final phase today to the dis cordant note of religious antagonism, and enlivened by the possibility of collapse of the revolt agalnat John H. McCooey, veteran Broooklyn ally of Tammany hall. A cry of "Hltlerlsm" was raised agalnat Joseph V. McKce, independent Democratic candidate, for an article written tn 1915. while he was a teach er, In which, according to Florello L Guard la., fusion candidate, he critl cited the ethics of Jewish school chll dxen. Samuel Untermyer, prominent Jew ish leader, charged the article wiw Inspired by "an Ignoble misconcep tion of our people." and demanded an explanation of McKce-ra demand answered by the recovery party candi date that no at tuck on Jews "was mode or Intended." "Mr. McKee's explanation explalna nothing," Untermyer said today. While the antl-semittem issue was being brought Into the campaign, Brooklyn Democratic district leaders were gathering for a "showdown with McCooey, on last week's demand for his abdication, or as an alternative his endorsement of McKee. Kenneth R. Sutherland, who Fri day was stripped of his $9,140 a year job at city hall, continued to lead the fight against McCooey with a cnll to rid the Democratic party of "Its asinine leadership." On the antl-scmltlsm Issue. Mc Kee aocured Laguardla of Injecting It Into the campaign "deliberately, vic iously and for self-gain by misinterpreting the Intent and spirit of a single paragraph In an article written almost 20 years ago." As proof of his good faith, McKce cited his friendship with the late Louis Ma rah ill, a law partner of Un termyer. Rockefeller Plan For Rum Control it I Populistic, Aged" CHICAGO. Oct. 17. (UP) The Women's Christian Temperance Union Issued a statement today (Monday) that John d! Rockefel ler's "new" Ideas on liquor control are really 40 years old. "The Idea to solve the liquor problem by a strict national con trol with all private profit elimin ated from the liquor business may sound new," the organization stat ed. "But, 40 years ago the populist party In Iowa, engaged In an effort to tear up Wall Street and the Rockefeller family by the roots, charged In their Iowa state plat form that both republicans and democrats were engaged tn an at tempt to outbid one another for support of the saloon element . . . and said: "'We demand thst the present liquor law shall remain until such time as It can be replaced by what Is known as state and national control with all profits eliminat ed." AP) Part of the) beautiful color pattrn of feathers baa been discovered by Dr. Prank R. Llllle and Dr. Mary juhn, hla re arch associate. Their work was don at th Ma rine biological laboratory here and at the University of Chicago. As a result they hav grown rooster feathers possessing mark ings more gorgeous than nature'! designs. The feathers are grown on adult birds and In only a few weeks' time. Several sets, all different, can be grown on the selfsame rooster. AU the colors are permanent. Ilrnnone Poes the Trick One method la to giv the roosters Injections of the hermon thyroxin. under the skin. A hermon e is chemical secreted by a ductless gland, such as th thyroid. It Is spread through the body by the blood. The color pageant of feathers, the scientists found, Is formed tn the stems. A small amount of thyroxin causes pigment to form next to the stem,) In a spindle-shaped patch, More thyroxin widens this pigment deposit Into the form of a half moon on each side of th stem. StIU more of the hermon similarly paints bar straight across the feather. Varying Amounts Change Colors All this color deposit Is made by the growing tip of feather. By varying the amount of thyroxin and the frequency of Injections the feath er designers combined spindles, half moons and bars Into a variety of shapes. The thyroxin Induce these re sults by speeding up the bird's met abolism, rate according to the vol ume Injected. Instead of thyroxin plain hen hermon may be Injected. Thereupon th rooster's metabo lism rat no longer changes. But th pigment Itself changes from male colors to female. Also th natural patterns change from male to fe male markings. Changes Wotfc Both Ways While th colors produced are last ing, the effect of the hen hermone Injection Is temporary. So by regu lating the Injections a growing roos ter feather can be switched to and fro from male to female from time to time. Each switch leaves Its per manent mark In both color and pat ent on the feather These experiment wr made chiefly with brown leghorns. Long feathers were plucked and th her mones Injected while th new feath ers wore growing In. The health of the chickens was not affected If th amount of the hermones, particu larly thyroxin, waa gauged properly.
