SPORTS TAX SUGGESTED E Meier's Relief Committee Says Huge Sum Could Be Realized When Dry Re peal Becomes Effective PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 14 (T) A tax on liquor In the event the 18th amendment U repealed, and a tax on the receipts of various sport were among the suggestions submit ted by the ways snd means sub committee of Governor Meier's relief committee of 32, at its meeting here 1st Wednesday. The committee was given the task of determining the most feasible means of raining sufficient revenue to carry on Oregon's unemployment relief program until the end of 193. The amount needed has been esti mated as high as $17,000,000. Big Sum Possible. John Beckman, author of the Beck man Hquor bill in the last session of the state legislature, appeared be fore the committee with an estimate that beer can stand a tax of $1 a barrel In addition to the W a barrel federal tax. He suggested light wines could he taxed up to 40 cents a gal lon.
