PAGE STT BEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, SfEDFORD, , OREGON, FRIDAY, SEPTEilBER 1, 1933. Growing Tree On Flank of ' Mt. Mazama Sealed In Hot Pumice and Ash Before Mountain Top Blown Off CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK, Ore. (Bpl.) An event algnlflesnt la tbe geologlo history of Crster lake, a carbonised tree, believed to have been coverM by volcanic material as a re sult ot explosive action, ni discov ered recently along the Inner rim ot the like. The discover? 1 regaraea as climax to long efforts, under the direction of Park Natursilst P. a Ubbey, to locate aucb material with in the Immediate area of the rim at concrete evidence that explosion was an Important factor In tbe destruc tion of Mt. Mazama, the remain ot which now serve a a bed for Crater lake. Alive When Covered. The discovery waa made by Ranger Naturallit Albert B. Long, while at' algned to research study, and wu uncovered by Mr. Long ana park Naturaiut Llbbey. Only a very small portion of the specimen was exposed when first located. The log, as un earthed, was .53 inches In length, ISV4 Inches In diameter at the top and 1SH Inches at the base. It waa tending In an almost upright posi tion. Indicating the tree was alive at the time It waa covered. The . lower section of the tree. In' eluding large branching roots, wu not carbonised and large cavities re suited from the decomposition of the roots and stump. Tbe tree wu com pletely carbonised from' the top for a distance of 44 Inches, at the end of which a break occurred with a cavity of lOVi lnchea resulting from the slipping of the , lower section. Below the break, 814 Inches of car feonlzed log wu found, grading into uncarbonlzed material which pro gressively became more decomposed. The roots, now decomposed, were or flnlally Imbedded In a layer of gla cial debris, dipping at an angle of 11 degrees to the west, with layers on top reposing at different degrees. Important Find, The location of a carbonized log within the existing crater slope, with ft stump and roots uncarbonlsed and partially decomposed, presents evi dence of great importance. After careful study, Park Naturalist Llbbey bu oome to the conclusion that ero sion ot the Inner, rim slope hu shift ed the crest of the rim outward and that at the time of entombment, the tree wu growing on the radiating alope of old Mazama. Cool puralco end pumlclte tumbled down the slope above to cover the roots and bue of the tree, followed by aubsequent covering of hot voloanlo ejects, pum ice and ash, settling around the tree so fut that air wu excluded and combustion prevented. Carbonization resulted. The wood of the roots and bate of the tret trunk at the present being only partially decomposed, would tend to show that explosive activity of Mt. Mazama wu more recent than previously estimated. The presence of glacial deposits over the tree es tablishes the fact that the entomb ment wu prior to the destruction of the old volcsnlc cone, since higher elevations of the mountain necessar ily existed In order to have a glacier form, . . Explosion Proved. The similar conditions of entomb ment, carbonization of logs and ex cessive depth of the volcanic debris long the Diamond Lake highway present evidence of the excessive mount of eruptive material distrib uted by explosive action of the vol cano. It appears reasonable to as sume that explosive action wu the major force Involved In the destruc tion of the upper portions of the vol canic cone, although It Is possible subsidence, sapping and undermining may have contributed an appreciable part in the enlargement ot the or iginal crater. The discovery of the carbonized log within the rim Is regarded u an Im portant eclentlflo discovery and will be followed by further Intensive re search efforts by Park Naturalist Llbbey. Specimens of the carbonized material will be placed among the exhibits In the einnott Memorial ori entation station. It Is planned to recover the log In a condition u nearly similar to thu In which It wu found so posltllve evidence will remain In the future and thereby maintain a perpetual record of the find. In soms cases of cold packing the cold fruit, raw augar and 'cold water are put Into the Jar. In other cases material la blanched then dipped In cold water before It Is placed In the Jars to be covered with hot syrup or hot water. Q. What advantage hu the Cold Pack over the Hot Pack? . A. The Hot Pack method allows some of the flavor and food values to be boiled sway In the cooking process. Q. Does sugar tend to shrink fruit? A. Yes. Its use Is favored u a preservstlve and most people prefer the flavor of the cooked In sugar. Q. Why do pears sometimes dls oolor In the top of the Jar? A. Probably they have not been Immersed In water u soon u they were peeled or to high heat hu been used In processing. (Of course, they should not be over-crowded In the Jar or allowed to scorch against the top.) Q Why do fruits snd tomatoes sometimes come to the top of the Jar? A. Overripe material; careless pack ing; over-cookrng. Q. What causes liquid to boll out of Jar during process? A. Jsrs are too full or too high pressure, or In pressure cooker too sudden lowering of temperature. (Cooker should not be opened or pet cock released . until Indicator goes back to zero.) Q. It liquid is boiled out will food keep? , A. Yes. It It would keep with the liquid. ... Q. Should very ripe foodstuff be processed less time thsn leas ripe ma terial? A. No. If 'anything. It should be cooked longer since It Is more likely to have started fermentation. Q. Should Jars be turned upside down to test for leakage? A. No. Q. How should Jars be plsced In the oven? A. So that they are In the center of the oven and not touching each other or the slds of the pan .(If a pan Is used). Q. How do you figure time of proc essing? A. Follow the Instructions In your recipe or the method suggested by your .Instruction bookv Usually, !n sn oven count, when' material Is placed In oven; In a boiler when water begins to boll, and In the procure cooker when pressure reaches amount required In recipe. Q. How full should the Jars be In Cold Pack method? A. To one-half Inch If using water or 1M Inches from top If using syrup. Q. Does It Injure vegetables to overcook them? A. UNDER -cooking Is' dangerous. Overcooking usually changes appear ance slightly and may make the ma terial rather toft, but will not ruin It. a-, A few REAL BARGAINS In PIANOS at present low prices which can not be guaranteed alter September first.
