She knowa them all. even their per- aonalltles and complexes, and haa recognized the rarity of a sleepy-eyed night flower or a retiring moil cling ing to a hot atone on the mountain aide where paesers-by would think they were trampling on mere weeda. "It's both my hobby and my busi ness," declared Mra. Nye. who la do ing a work ahe lovea. Ahe not only enablea the rock gardener to have unusual planta for hie rockery, but ahe la discovering and preserving the wild floral apeclmena of thla aectlon of the Pacific coast for the botanical world. All of the delicate wild flow- era grow under the ministering of thla botanist, who aearchea for the planta from the lofty alopea of Mt. McLoughlln to the deep canyona and ealty aands of the sea beach. No matter what the native altitude, the planta take to the rock gardens of which Mra. Nye haa a multitude cfis ceding from the green alopea at her ho-me out to the lower pasture land. To help the fiowera grow In their new aurroundlnga, Mrs. Nye mixes Tour kinds of soil in order that the planta may aeek their required food. Planta from the alkali districts are placed In aoll containing lime or eshea. Sometimes a plant refuses to become reconciled, but It soon thrlvee again after a little adjustment. Usu ally It needs transplanting to the lower and more moist sections of the rock garden, or even shading from the hot aun will turn the trick. tn Mrs. Nye's collection of over 300 varieties of aedums, mosses and flow era, ahe haa discovered that Oregon poaaeasea some of the rarest and fin eat apeclmena In the world, with many yet to be dlacovered. In the 100-mtle radius from which ahe col leeta, principally In Jackson and Josephine counties, with some planta coming from Douglas and Klamath and northern California, -she found IS apeclea of Lewlsla Redlvlva. or bltterroot,- the state flower of Mon tana. This plant waa discovered first by Meriwether Lewis, also a botanist, when he came over the Oregon Trail In 1805. Back In St. Louis a year later, he found the plant making an effort to grow, even though pressed between the leaves of a book, hence the botanical name, algnlfylng new life. The common brodaea exoldes or snakehead, the xerophytlum tenax or squaw Illy, and the wild buckwheat (race the lava rocka and pumice atone or the rockeries aa beautifully aa the more dainty violets and panelea. Flowers are displayed to a better advantage by the use of dark rocka. Sagebrush proudly holds its place among the rest, and la a novelty to many vlaltora. taught In the midst of the native floral exhibit la a display of many varieties of the wild flowers' of Eu rope. Including the bluebell flower of Scotland. These, not distinguish able from the native planta by the untrained eye, were aent to Mra. Nye from a friend in Auatrle. , Mra. Nye haa learned something ef the configuration of the country through her atudy, having climbed Mt. Thellaon, Mt. Bailey. Mt. Kerby and Whiskey peak. She will visit Tallowbox In the Applegate thla aum mer. She haa gathered a few rare rock formatlona, and these eamples are a source of Interest to visitors at her gardens. She boasts a "diamond mine." a peculiar formation found tn the Prospect vicinity, and petrified seaahella found la the upper Apple- gate country form a unique rock Mra. Nye tramps over the mountains In the aprlng to collect new plan, and In the eummer ah goes to gather seeds. Her customers are lo cated In the tar corn era ef the world; one In New eZaland, others In Aus tria, Ireland and England, Seeds sre her specialty, although ahe sella plants to Portland nurseries, and re tails a few locally. She also carries on a mall order business In aeeda. The Wild wood Oardena, located one fourth mile off the Crater Lake high way, where the traveler would least expect to find myriads of botanical exhibits, haa been In existence for four yeara. Clarence Lown of Pough- keepale, N. Y., father of the American rock garden, wrote to Mra. Nye for wild fiowera from thia section, and gave her booka on rock gardening Other frienda In the east wrote to her for a apeclmen from thla country. and from that start ahe haa developed a work that, even though the lay- man doea not know exists In his county, famoua botanists know about and have come to vlalt. Botanlats from New York unlvcrsltlea and other places have been at Wlldwood Oar dena. aa have Instructors from the state college and university and the southern Oregon Normal. "It may be Just a fad, or It may be an awakening to the worth of our wild flowers, Mra.
