PAGE TEH MTSDTOTID MATE TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, THURSDAY, JULY 27, 1933. tt . By the World FORGOT gfoff A New Serial by Ruby M. Ayres Chapter 48 THE FIRE GEORGIE ill wet through before he had gone a mile, but ber mind wae too full of the detail of ber sorrow for her to pay heed to the rain. There waa. Indued, something comforting about the steady fall of It, and the necessities of walking occasionally took ber mind off her loneliness and her desire to see Nicholas, or at least to know where. exactly, be was. Thero was Clifford too; it seemed terribly harsh that m order to re main true to herself and her own Ideals, It should have been neces sary to hurt an Innocent and kindly oul so very much. At last she arrived at the little town which always soemed so mag nificent In contrast to the Tillage where she lived. The only vacant eat In the picture bouse wa one Tight st the back under the gallery. Georgle did not care; she squeezed past a couple of stout wo- . men and sat down with, s sigh of relief. She was tired. Lately she had not done much walking. The big picture of the afternoon was half way through, and though she watched it, Georgle's thoughts kept wandering away many miles way to a place called Ireland where she had never .been, and which seemed further away than Germany, further even than Amer ica, as far away as Eternity. . One of the . stout women beside ber said In tones of great satisfac tion as the last scene of the big pic ture flickered out: ' "There, 1 knew It would end hap pily they always do." And the other stout woman an swered cheerily: 'Well, and so they should. Things' come right in life too, If yon only give them a chance." Georgle felt a strange little thrill of envy; It was good to find some one who believed that Ufa came right; she wished that she could be lieve It also. "The Topical News." Georgle watched mechanically while hurdle races, stout gentlemen makin.' speeches, girls who all looked more or less like Berate Boyd diving Into shallow pools, and airmen risking their lives in Im possible stunts, flitted across the screen, and then Georgle's heart seemed to miss a beat as she read the caption, "Famous travellers of the week, by air and sea." , A be-spectacled American million aire alighting from an aeroplane at Croydon; a well-known racing mo torist walking down a ship's gang way at Southampton, a musical comedy actress standing In the doorway of a Pullman at Waterloo, and last of all "Mr. Nicholas Boyd, the. famous film star, leaving the mall boat at Dublin." Georgle felt as it her heart had topped beating as In a dream she - saw the tall figure of Nicholas Boyd limping slowly down the gangway, bis coat-collar turned up, one hand rastUg on the wooden rail. The disfigured side of his face was away from the camera, but Just as be reached land he turned his head, apparently unconscious of what was happening, and It seemed to Georgle that his eyes looked straight into hers. Just for a moment, then the pic ture flickered out and was gone. The stout lady beside her broke Into voluble talk. "Poor dear, they needn't have photographed hlml Did you see the ugly side of his face? And he was so good looking. Such a shame I think!" Georgle's hoad had sunk onto her arms; she almost felt as it she were dying. The stout Jady touched ber shoulder "Are you 111, Miss?" She looked up with an effort. . "No thank you at least . . It's rather warm Isn't It? I think I'll go out. QHB made her way blindly Into ' the fresh air, her face white, her hands clenched In her coat pockets. Yes, surely they might have spared blml She felt the sobi ris ing In her throat as she walked away from the little picture house, feeling as It she was leaving behind the ma., she loved. "Oh why can't I be with hlmf Why can't II" she asked herself desperately. "It only something would happen to make It possible." 'Albany Enjoys Bank Facility ALBANY. Ore., July 27. (AP) Branch banks of the United States National and the Pint National banks of Portland opened In Albany yesterday, giving this city Its first regular banking facilities since the March financial noldays. It seemed so futile, this separa tion, when they loved each other, so unnecessarily cruel. "Paper, Miss?" A bright oyed boy thrust an evening paper towards her, and Georgle mechanically hunted for a penny. Bus just going. Miss," the boy said again with an evident knowl edge of the requirements of movie patrons. Georgle came back to the present wltb a start, and running across the road she managed to secure the last seat on tbe shabby little bus. - The rain had stopped but every thing looked grey end desolate, the street lamps twinkling through the darkness like wet eyes. The world seemed to be full of tears Georgle thought In despair. Why was the world so full o. tears? Mrs. Drill had gone when she reached home, but Edward Ban croft called to ber from bis stt.dy. "Is that you?" "Yes." She went Into the room. "I suppose you didn't think to get me an evening paper?" he asked gruffly. Yes." Georgle laid the paper on tbe table. His oyis were upon her. "You'ro wet through," be said. Go and change" Tbe reluctant kindness In his voice brought the tears to Goorgle's eyes. "It's mackintosh," she said. I shan't be hurt" She waited, hoping vaguely tor something more, she hardly knew what. But Edward Bancroft had taken up the paper and was en grossed In Its contents. After a mo ment she said, "I've been to the pic tures." Anything to keep the conversa tion going; she folt as If she were shut Into an empty world where there was nobody, to speak to, no body to answer if she spoke. Edward Bancroft grunted, "Damned silly things," he said. "Ought to be stopped. Even paupers seem to be able to find money to go and wallow In the rubbish they show at picture bouses." "I Mke them," Georgle said. "Humph," he shook out tbe paper Impatiently. "Well, here's one of the beastly places burnt down, and a good fob too. Two people burnt to death Well, what can they expect If they go to such death-traps; won der it doesn't happen more often." How dreadful," Georgle said. In the following silence there was a knock at the front door; nobody ever tried to ring the belt and It tbey had It would have been use less. "I'LL boo who It is," Georgle said. In a moment she returned. "A message from Mrs. Spears, Uncle Edward she would like to see you." "Humph well, she can wait Say I'll come presently." Edward Bancroft spoke grumpily, but vben Georgle returned from de livering the message he had gone upstairs to his roam. She repressed a little smile, real ising that perhaps the Boar's Head was not the only place whore what Mrs. Spears said, was meant. She sat down by the Are and took up tho evening paper. A headline caught ber eye, anc she road on mechanically. "An sppnlllnn fire In tbe new KHIIi-k studios early today resulted In the traglo loss of two Uvea. Miss Be-rnle Doyd, tho young fllm stnr who has mads such a rapid strldo towards fame during the East few months, was trapped In ar dressing room, and though doaperato attempts were mails to rofttMie her, she wan burnt to death before she could he reached. An other tragic feature of the disaster la that Bishop Letter, a woll-known American visiting this country and who li believed to have been Inter ested In the Kllllck Film Company, also lost hie lire at the same time. The two bodice, charred beyond rocngnttlon were found close to gether." Edward Bancroft's loud Tolci boomed suddenly through the si lent house. "Goorglol Georglel Whore the devil Is my blue suit?" and then again as no answor was forthcom ing. "Georgle? Can't you hear? Why the deuce . . ." and then his lumber lug step came down the stairs. He pushed wide tbe half closed study door. "Have you gone stone deaf thai yon can't hear when you're being called? Here am I ... oh my God Georgle!" But Georgia was lying huddled and Insensible on the floor and could not answer. fCopyrtosi, Jl is, DouMsday Dora Qeorgle st (sat comet Into a haven or hepplneaa, Monday. . Kv-Hrnntor Dies DfHVBR.
