T'hMi Kelly Taylor telle Georgia that Klcholaa ia returning to Eng land, the operation a failure. Ber nie Bod, Nicholas1 cetranged wife, ia in London. Chapter It GEORQIE'S CALL TUB Irst tbongbt la Ccorgie'i heart was on of exceeding bit terness that Nicholas bad sot told her himself. Tben with an effort she recovered berselt. Aftor all, be owed her nothing; be had never pretended to return ber lore for blm, bad never even asked for It, and by the strength of ber own sorrow for blm, she guessed what be must be feeling the bitter disappointment, and even some thing of shame. And be was on his war hornet At any moment he might be In J.ondon, near to ber, and yet so many thou sand miles away by reason of the fact that Bernle, hla wife, was also bere. Germany bad seemed close at band In comparison with the gulf made by. Billy's presence. Kelly said quietly: "Sorry if I gave you a shock; I thought you'd know." She touched Georgle's unresponsive hand. Georgia said faintly, after a mo ment, "Do you know I suppose you don't know when be will arrive?" "I tried to hear," Nelly admitted. "But they seemed to guess I was llstenlug, so they lowered their voices, but It'a my opinion that be's due tonight." "Then be won't stay with her?" Nelly laughed. "I should say not," sbe said. She hesitated, tben added: "Look here, I may as well own up. I knew you'd be Interested, so when she'd gone to the studio, 1 had a look at the letter " "Oh, Nellyl" "Don't 'oh Nelly' me," Nelly said toutly. "And there wasn't anything o private about It when all's said and done Just the sort of letter be 'might bare written to anybody. "And It said?" Georgle breathed. "It said she was not to bother about him; that be was going to stay in a furnished flat for a tew days before be left for abroad." She fumbled in a pocket and pro duced a crumpled envelope. "Here's the address, I copied It . down for you. 1 never can remem ber names and things." "Oh, you are kind," Georgle said. Nelly made a little grimace. "Thought you'd soon get over be ing shocked," sbe said bluntly. "I think you're wasting your time run ning after him, but that's your busi ness. Flore, take the address, I must be off," but sbe lingered yet another moment to ask with pardonable curi osity, "I say, what are you going to do?" "I don't know," Georgle said, but In her heart ahe know well enough. It Bernle was content to let him creep back Into London, unwanted and unheralded, sbe waa not con tent; she remembered with a sigh of relief that her mother and Blsbop were both dining out that night. It was aA official dinner which Evelyn had been loath to attend. . ' "Dull women, uninteresting food, and dull speeches," sbe had said. "Bishop will say the same things he bas said at dlnnera ever since I mar ried blm, and I shall bave to smile and look proud while all the time I feel more like screaming." DOOR Bishop, Georgia thought; It had been almost on the tip of ber tongue to suggest that she go to the dinner also; she was glad now that she had suppressed the Im pulse, for it left her with a free eve ning. At last they went. Goorgle bad dona bor llttlo best to speed their departure; she bad told Evelyn that the looked lovely that sbe would be the prettiest woman there. "Which Is saying Tery little If you only knew," her mother retorted. "The wives of men who go to official dlnnera never have a decent frock between tbem." "Well, you have," Georgle said. Bishop's alow smile lit bis sombre yes. "Some people might call It Inde cent," be said, Evelyn turned on him sharply. "If ' that Is your idea of a Joke, it's a very poor one," sbe said. "Fortunately, I bare given up hoping for admira tion from you." ENI RELATED AT The Owen-Orgtfa ' lumber mill, which planned to tttvrt operations lull blant next Monday, ha bwn forced to delay th opening until Wednesday, Jamei H. Owen, man- ager. announced this afternoon. The Sbe sailed out of the room In blgb dudgeon, and Georgle looked at ber step-father sympathetically as be followed. But tbey had really gone at last. and with shaking Sngers Georgle put on ber hat and coat. It gave ber a pang to remember bow she bad told Nicholas In ber latter of ber new, expensive clothes. and bow that she wss much pret tier; tbat must have hurt him In the face of bis own bitter disappoint ment. It was nine o'clock by the time sbe was ready, and she slipped down the wide staircase and across the big lounge ball feeling like Cinde rella going to her Brat ball. Strange bow many Hinds of happi ness theru were in the world; to seme people It would be happiness to be meeting a fairy prince, handsome and young and rich. But to her It waa happiness because sbe was go ing to meet a sick, defeated man who really cared nothing if he never saw her again. It waa raining and sbe took a taxi at the corner and gave tbe address which Nelly bad copied down for ber. It seemed a very little way to Su James Street; there was no time to collect her thoughts, or to decide what she would say before they stopped at the door of a block of data and sbe found berselt on tbe path, fumbling with nervous lingers for the fare. Suppose Nicholas bad not arrived? For a moment her courage deserted ber; she looked up the street and down the street, then with a defiant toss of ber pretty bead she plunged through the big door and found her self face to face with a uniformed porter. MR. BOYD?" she asked. "Mr. Boyd!" Tbe man repeat ed the name as If he bad never beard it before, and then said with a flash of illumination: "Oh, yes, Miss, tbe gentleman who arrived from Ger many this evening. No 2 Flat; I'll take you up." Georgle would have preferred to walk; It would bave given her a little time to regain ber breath, but it was obviously not the time to. argument, and a moment later sh found ber selt on a little dark landing feeling as It she were on hor way to rob thi Bank of England. "Door right op poslte, Miss," the porter said. Georgle rang the bell. Almost al once tbe door opened and a man whom she had never seen befori was looklug at ber questlonlngly. Georgle moistened her hot lips. "I thought . . . Mr. Boyd?" she tal tered. Tbe man looked doubtful, hut ai usual Georgle's eyes won. "Mr. Boyd Is not seeing visitors,' be said. "But it you will step lnsldi I wll ask blm. Your nsme, please?' "Miss Bancroft." Sbe stepped Inside obodlently, and tbe man closed the door behind ber. It was quite a small flat, with tout doors all close to her, and with rather a musty, tinllvedln sort ol atx.-spbore about It tbat seemed tc cry aloud for open windows and bright fires. It seemed an eternity until th strange man returned; be looked sympathetic, Georgle thought, and there waa a regretful note In hli voice as he said' "Mr. Boyd Is very sorry, but . . . " He broke off as th door of the room which he bad closed wltb great care behind htm opened suddenly and Nicholas himself stood there. "Come In, Robin," he said, and tben to the man: "It's all right, Archer, I've changed my mind." Tbe room was so dimly lit tbat for a moment Georgia could see nothing as she moved blindly forward, tben slowly ber eyes grew accustomed to the gloom, Nicholas waa standing by tbe fire place hla face avorted, and even when he spoke he did not turn hli bead. "How did you And out where I waa?" Georgia swallowed a little lums In her throat that threatened to cboke her before she answered: "It's rather a long story" and then with a little cry. "Oh, It's wondorful to see you again." She heard his short laugh. "Can you see me? I purposely pul most of tbe lights out," and then at sbe did not speak, he added, "I am no more beautiful than I was, Rohln.", She gave a little dive forward and caught bis hand, "It's you, anyway," she said.
