MEDFORD 55TL TRIBUTE, lEDFORD, OREGON, TUESDAY. fAY 30. 1033. PAGE TURK 15 Many Surprises in Store for Guests at Cooking School Tomorrow FLOW FREELY IN Ten Million Made in 1930 and 1931 Is Disclosed by Probers $48,000 Paid Out in Income Taxes By NATHAN ROBERTSON Associated Press Staff Writer (Copyright, 1933, by the Associated Tress) WASHINGTON, May 30. (AP) J. P. Morgan As Company's reports to een ate Investigators rfiow the firm made nearly ten million dollars on sale and underwriting of securities in 1930 and 1031, years In which the bank's partners paid only $48,000 in come tax to the United States. This startling evidence, brought out while the banking committee Investigation of the Morgan house remained In recess until Wednesday, gave a hint of the amounts the 20 partners must have been able to de duct from their Income tax returns under the law permitting capital losses to be subtracted from profits. 1 From these earnings also were de ducted the running overhead, ex penses of the firm. Depression No Curb Almost as surprising was evidence that the great banking house made more on sale of securities and its underwriting business In each of these two "depression years" than they hod made In the boom year In 1929, when they paid an Income of $11,000,000. The totals for the three years, In cluding the Morgan company and Drexel & Company, its Philadelphia affiliate, in round figures were: 1929 $2,936,000. 1930 $8,730,000. 1931 $3,131,000. Profits for 1932 were not included Jn the figures presented by Pecora. Change In Law Cuged Demands for changes In Income tax laws have echoed In congress since the revelation that the Morgan partners have escaped payments dur ing the last two years. The house in passing a new tax bill last week, eliminated the carry over loss provision of the law, and Representative Vinson (D., Ky.) an nounced yesterday that the ways and means committee, of which he Is a member, will soon begin an Investi gation to find and close other "loop holes" in the statute. Pecora's figures showed that for the five-year period, 1927 to 1931 In clusive, the Morgan .firm made more than $18,000,000 from the sale of securities. Morgan partners testified during last week's Inquiry that the investment business was a compara tively minor part of their operations. In addition to their profits from the sale and underwriting of securi ties, the Morgan partners reported to the eorrmlttee profits running into the millions from operations in joint accounts for syndicates but the total was untabulated. FAVORITE PRODUCTS f "It's always good news when you find a product which satisfactorily re places several others," says Miss Hes ter Heath, who la conducting The Mall Tribune's Cooking School, re ferring to Ohlrardellt's Ground Choco late, which Is among the useful pro ducts being demonstrated In connec tion with the school. "Ghirardelira takes the place of old style solid chocolate, of cocoa, and of bitter chocolate," Miss Heath went on, "because It is real chocolate, from which part of the fat has been re moved. It Is equally satisfactory for fine chocolate beverage, and for cook ing and baking of all sorts." Miss Heath pointed out that Ghl rardelll's Ground Chocolate has a full, fine chocolate aroma, developed from high-grade blended cacao beans, and protected by a vacuum process which seals the flavor In. OLDENBl'RO "Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death and with hell are we at agreement For we have made lies our refuge, and under false hood have we hid ourselves. There fore thus saith the Lord God. Beho'd I lay In Zion a atone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone a sure founda tion: he that believeth shall not make haste. Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand." Isa. 28:19-18. One of the most subtle sources of the powers of evil Is their apparent agreement to help each other. Not openly and brazenly, but national Investigations have brought out that fact beyond dispute. Let interna tional anger turn the spotlight on the white slave traffic and certain in ternational features are revealed. Lat them turn the light on the interna tional narcotic ring and again the same features appear. The U. S. senate investigates the liquor ring and low and behold again the same fam iliar lines. "IF IT'S SNIDER'S IT'S THE BEST TO BUY", cover is really controlling the movie industry and you have the key to the whole situation. When therefore we say that with the prospects of re established grog shops an unholy brood is leering around the corner, there Is recorded proof to back that statement. In speaking of the moving picture Industry may we say iirat of all th.it the local managers anywhere are ry no means their own absolute masters in the business. With the fondest desire to give only the good and the helpful they must at times show things that cannot possibly be called either good or helpful. Let us be fair with the movies. Do we ever attend them? Decidedly yes. That is the reason we know that your local managers may at times brlug the most instructive and otherwise worth while pictures with distress ingly discouraging results In attend ance. The so-called better class too otten merely make demands for the better pictures without supporting them when they are presented. This Is positive. Movies are here to stay and their Influence for good or bad is tremendous. It is up to the better class to make them increasingly an Influence for good. Phoenix Services Well Attended PHOENDX.
