(AP) Twenty- five Oregon counties rate with the beat In the least amount of Illiteracy! It was revealed today by Char lee A. Howard, superintendent of public In struction, who received a United States survey from the federal department. The twenty-five counties all re corded below one per cent illiteracy when the national census was taken In 1930. The data waa compiled by the national advlsnry committee . on literacy. Bight of the remaining eleven counties had an average of from one to two per cent illiteracy. These were Multnomah, Marlon, Columbia, Uma tilla, Hood River. Wasco, Otlllam and Harney. The other three, Klamath, Jefferson and Sherman, rated the lowest In the state, from 3 to 4.3 per oent. No counties In the state recorded lower than the national average of 4.3 per oent. The rating of the state aa compared with all other states was not received, but Oregon appeared to be among the leaders. Last week Or egon rated fourth in high literacy according to a census based on maga zine reading. The new averages were baaed solely upon illiteracy as ob tained by census takers. On April 1, 1807, the area north of Phoe nix and east of Bear creek was set apart by legal process to be known as school district No. 24, normally called North Phoenix. The pioneer school there has helped to make his tory and the worn yellowed pages of Its register are full of fascinating records. Believe It or not, W. E. Phlpps once ruled there as Instruc tor, Wm. Gore gave a reading to a breathless audience, and John Barne burg was an honor student. The present school term closes next Friday with a basket dinner and pro gram and everyone who has been as sociated with this school is Invited to attend. The program will be given during the afternoon. Mrs. Donna Oraffls, who was a pupil here In 1868 will give a talk on old times and memories. All former pupils and their famil ies are urged to attend. Wash., have been designated head quarters of four districts with a view of simplifying the work of enrolling recruits to fill the remainder of Ore gon's quota In the civilian conser vation corps. The anon unce men t was made by Raymond B. Wilcox, chairman of the state relief commit tee, who received word from Major General Mai In Craig, commander of lie ninth corps area, Ban Francisco. Nine hundred of Oregon's quota of !000 men between 18 and 36 years, have been enrolled. The otjier 1100 men will be called as rapidly as the camps are made ready. The Medford district quota of 330 Is distributed as follows: Coos 60, Curry 7, Jackson 00, Josephine 34, Klamath 68. Eugene district quota 360: Ben ton 35, Deschutes 30, Douglas 46. Wallowa 10, Wheeler 6. The entire quotas from Clackamas, Columbia. Washington and Yamhill counties were taken In the first call. ALBANY, N. Y., May 35. (AP) With New York City voting 50 to 1 fnr repeal, the Empire State today lined up with the five states which already have taken a stand in favor of banishing the 18th amendment. Fifty-two of the 67 up-state coun ties and the five countlea of New York City reported aa incomplete total vote of 1,734,368 for repeal ana 163,418 against. This was on the basis of reports from 0843 of the state's 6130 districts. Only rural Yates, Delaware and Schoharie counties were declared dry on the basis of Incomplete returns. Cortland county, which In former years was dry by a wide margin, re ported a substantial majority for repeal. JURIES AND AUTOS ARE DISCUSSED AT ACTIVIAN MEETING Charles Prltchett and Hllding Bengteon entertained Act Ivans with ahort talks at their regular meeting at. the Hotel Medford Tuesday night. Pritchett's subject was "Car Main tenance." He gave some highlights on how to keep the car in good con dition, where to look, for trouble -and the equipment necessary for trouble free operation. Attorney Bengteon's subject was "The Jury System." He outlined the present system which he said or iginated In Iceland. In describing the grand Jury Mr. Bengtson read the grsnd Juror's oath of secrecy. He described trhe duties of a trial Jury and a Jury of Inquest. Mr. Beng-5-Aon said the penalty for perjury In Oregon Is from 5 to 35 years, and the penalty for inducing a witness to perjur Is from 3 to 3 years. Ralph Bailey, program chairman, announced that two members of the club will be called upon to give short talks at each meeting until every one has had a chance. At the next meeting Austin Dodge will talk on "Car Lubrication," and Harold's sub ject will be "Men's Clothing Mer chandising." E By TOURIST INTEREST Medford will have museum com parable to those In the larger centers when plans or the new. civic arrairs committee of the chamber of com merce are completed, la the state ment of Dr. R. E. Lee, chairman of the group today. At a meeting of the committee yesterday, the ques tion of establishing a museum In Medford was thoroughly discussed and machinery has been set in mo tion which it Is believed will bring about the desired results In a short time. One or two buildings have been suggested and It is hoped that within a day or so a place will be selected in order that the immediate assem bling of historic relics can be started. Quite a number of persons wbo have exhibits which could be used In such a museum have promised cooperation and the committee will do everything possible In order to make Med ford's museum as outstanding aa possible gieat deal of attention to visitors Museums In bigger cities attract a and there can be no doubt but what the tourists visiting Medford will be very much Interested In seeing the exhibits on display here. It la also believed by the. commit tee that a museum will also be very helpful to the younger generation in Medford as It will be the means of teaching them something regarding the historic background of southern Oregon. It la the purpose of the committee to use every care In selecting exhibits and the articles loaned will be pro tected In every way possible. Tne civic anaira committee has one or two other projects In mind which when consummated will not only be of Interest to the visitors but will greatly improve Medford'a ap pearance and help In a program of making the city more beautiful.
