Phillip of Grant pass, dean of Rogue River fishermen, not for the largest fish but for hts youthful enthusiasm and courage m a fisherman. Mr. Phillips, a otrtl war veteran, In hie 86th year, on Tuesday landed a salmon, without assistance, that weighed under thirty pounds. This Is the second salmon he has caught this month. Mr, Phillips Is one of the three survivors of the local G A, R. post. In spite of prevailing unpleasant weather conditions fishing on Rogue river adjacent to Grants Pass con tinues to Improve. In proportion to the number of fishermen, the week end catch of salmon was compara tively small, but on Monday a new run of salmon put In appearance In this section and good catches were made during Monday and Tuesday all along the river from Savage Rapids dam to Jump-off-Joe. The fish are still averaging large, a number that were taken weighing over 30 pounds. With this late run. a number of "Jack" salmon have been seen, Bnd fly fishermen are eagerly watching for the summer steelheads whlc,b generally make their appearance with tibe late salmon run. With the water still high ana cold, fly fishing for summer steelhead should begin early this season, any time after the mid dle of June on the upper river near Trail, Dodge bridge and Bybee bridge, Trout fishing continues to Improve, but because of high water In the Rogue and tributaries, Is mostly done with salmon egg bait.
