There was a de cline In the total money payroll, due to lower average wages. The seasonally adjusted Index for employment atood at S3, compared with 89 In February, 67 In January and St March 1933. The payrolls Index, based on the 1928 monthly average as 100. was 33, compared with Z1 In the preceding month and 41 in March 1033. Actually there were Increases both In employment and payrolls In the lumber Industry, but tliey were less titan seasonal. Activity declined In the textile and food products groups. Campbell, whose steady progress- to the- finals had been a sur prise, staged ft hard fight In the opening set but his lack of exper ience proved ft handicap and he ieu before some superlative play.
