RED SCHEEL STARS
IN TENNIS TILTS
It took Red Bcheel, Mod ford high
school's fine all round athlete. Just
one set to get warmed up In the
finals of the high single tourna
ment Prlday. From then on It was
a walk for the -veteran number one
who produced a- burst of splendid
tennis to run through the final two
sets with the Ions of only one game,
and to capture the school title from
the sophomore, Verne Campbell in
straight sets. 7-B, 0-0, 6-1. The name
of Scheel, one of the most disting
uished In the annals of Med ford's
athletic lists, will be the first to go
down on the new Al Plche trophy.
As both finalists had gained the
final bracket without the loss of
a set a possible upset was antici
pated but after gaining a slight mar
gin in the first set's dueling Scheel
rollicked through the final two em
ploying a smart assortment of
strokes. Campbell, whose steady progress-
to the- finals had been a sur
prise, staged ft hard fight In the
opening set but his lack of exper
ience proved ft handicap and he ieu
before some superlative play. The
exhlbtlon that the All-State basket
ball player staged In the two final
seta was as fine as has marked any
final match and stood ous as a pos
sible good omen In the planned re
habilitation of Medford's tennis fortunes.
If the wind and rain that has per
sisted the past two days breaks, the
preppera are scheduled for a. preview
this morning then they take the
court against the Medford Tennis
club in what Is alao the. club's in
itial appearance for this season. It
promises a sorry start for the high
youths as against the background of
the match, the tennis club will par
ade six champions or former champ-
Ions. Opposing this lineup ft squad
of twelve high school racquet swing
ers has been named. They are; V.
Campbell. Kroschel, Brown, Cope,
Oebhard, Hicks, Merrick, Hotell.
Qulsenberry, Rao, Applegate, Dudely,
Holrgang, and Overmeyer.
