Respectfully, Detroit's branch banking system Is second only to New York's In number of .operating branches, ac cording to a recent research by the University at Michigan. Unfit for Public Office nviSEEGARDING the reign assumption of office, and his contribution to a campaign of dissension and strife, which resulted directly in bloodshed, County Judge Fehl merely on his civil record, should be recalled at the earliest possible moment. From every standpoint of good government, Judge Fehi has demonstrated his absolute unfitness for holding ANY public office. CLAIMING to uphold the orderly processes of s democratic form of government, from the very outset he has refused to abide by the first principle of that government, which is MAJORITY RULE. The fundamental law declares this county should be gov erned by a county court of three members, the policies of that court to be determined by a majority vote. : Not once or twice, but literally scores of times, Judge Fehl refused to abide by that majority vote. COMMISSIONER BILLINGS had been' elected to his place by '" a vote of the people, so had County Clerlt Carter, they had just as much right to their places in county government as Judge Fehl. In fact, future revelations may demonstrate they had far more right. But from the very start, before these two men had had a chance to do anything, good or bad, Judge Fehl demanded they withdraw. Not a single charge was filed against them but they had to step out because Judge Fehl TOLD THEM TO ! ' COMMISSIONER NEALON was duly and properly named to take the place of Commissioner Barneburg when the latter resigned. The legality of that appointment was not only sus tained locally, but by the attorney general of this state. Judge Fehl defied this legal and again refused to abide by demanded the resignation of he filed no charges, he told Nealon he had to get out because he, Judge Fehl, TOLD HIM TO. One would have to go to darkest Russia, to find any parallel to the dictatorial arrogance, the insolent un-Americanism, of this man, who in spite of popular demand, in spite of the latest revelations, insists upon holding the office, the ideals and prin ciples of which he has so brazenly outraged. FINALLY he promised to reduce taxes. He has not only not reduced them, but he has to date, beyond all doubt, cost the tax payers of this county more aotual cash, than any man who has ever held public office in the history of this community. When the final bill oomes in the taxpayers of this county will have to charge up literally thousands of dollars, to the inefficient and destructive activities of this man and to him ALONE. . ' '; AND NOW to add insult to injury, Judge Fehl, in a public announcement broadoast to the world, declares the in dictment brought against him for complicity in the theft and burning of ballots, is "a gigantio political frame-up to rob him of his office' , , y . ; There is "a law against political frame-ups, and illegal con spiracies. , Thore is a law against robbery. We now ask Judge Fehl to do what we have asked him to do, EVER SINCE HE STARTED HIS CAMPAIGN OF CHARACTER ASSASSINATION AND SLANDER, OF FALSEHOOD AND INNUENDO, MANY YEARS AGO. NAME THE MEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS POLITICAL FRAME-UP I NAME THE MEN GUILTY OF THIS ROBBERY I Produce the evidence you have to sustain these criminal charges, and talce that evidence before the grand jury, not tomorrow or next day, but NOW. If there IS a political frame-up, for the purpose of robbery, then we want to know it, and every right thinking and law abiding citizen in Jaokson county wants to know it I Produce your facts, produce your evidence. Or admit you have neither, that this charge like all your other charges was made up out of whole cloth, and thus stand self oonvioted of trying to continue the, Inflammatory, incendiary campaign of falsehood, blackmail and slander which brought this peaceful and law abiding com munity to the very brink of open revolution and ended in open violenoe and bloodshed I Where the People Stand THE huge turn-out at the funeral services for George Prescott was not only a great tribute to a loyal and faithful officer, but a tribute tc the splendid citizenship of Medford. It was a beautiful Spring day, the first of the kind this year. All Nature called for an exourslon into the country, and under normal circumstances, thore would have been practioally no one in town that afternoon. ; But the people of this oity felt they had a duty to perform, a tribute to pay, and over 4000 of them went to the Armory to pay their respects to the publio officer who laid down his life in the regular performance of his duty. In spite of that huge throng, and the intense feeling that had been aroused, there was no demonstration, no untoward incident, to mar the dignity and solemnity of the occasion. It was a perreet demonstration or stalwart, loyal, devoted, but restrained. . It shows where the people of this community stand, when forces of violenoe and destruction, threaten to overthrow the orderly government, under which It Is a Debt AS THE deplorable and needless sacrifice of Constable George police foroe run the risk of sudden death in the regular perfor mance of their duties. Members of the oity fire department assume similar risks, though the likelihood of fatalities is perhaps not so great. The members of both departments work for small pay, most of them like George Treseott have families dependent upon them, which in case of deathaccentuates and extends the force of the tragedy, : Would it not be a good idea, both from the standpoint of souud publio policy, and of justice to such men in the publio of terror, which followed his ruling, defied the local law, the edict of popular rule. He Commissioner Nealon. AGAIN the best sort 01 oitizensnip, they live. of Society service, to have included in every city budget a sufficient fund to provide life insurance for the regular members of the police and fire departments, in case they should be killed in THE REGULAR PERFORMANCE Such insurance would today be a God-send to the widow of Officer Prescott, who thanks to the generosity and loyalty of the people of this community, will be temporarily provided for by voluntary contributions. We give millions to those who die in their country's service in time of war. Yet as George Prescott demonstrated, there are "heroes of peace" as well as of war; men who as truly pay the last measure of their devotion, on the altar of their country, as if they died on the battle Such a hero of peace was providing for the family and in the defense of their community, should be a permanent charge upon society, cheerfully assumed and gladly paid and not a matter of charity or Personal Health Service By William Brady, M.D. Signed letters pertaining to personal health and hygiene, not to disease. diagnosis or treatment, will be answered By Dr. uraay u a stampeu, seu aildressed envelope Is enclosed. Address Dr. William Brady In care of THE ALTRUISM OF THE No matter how efficient an anti septic la or how many germs It will destroy or account for in so many seconds or min utes. It can't do the person who uses It any good to speak of. So far as I can learn there la no known antiseptic that haa any proved efficacy In the treatment of dis ease. No such agent or remedy has been dis covered that will appreciably modify or ameliorate any definite disease or Illness. This la the Irony ot science.' If you do not perceive the Irony It is because you do not know the first principles of pathology, the nature of disease. It you make habitual or frequent use of antiseptic remedies in the belief that the practice benefits you In any way, charge your credulity to your bad education. Indeed, there Is little or no evi dence that antiseptic medicines are worth using even to prevent Infec tious disease or to protect one against any prevailing epidemic disease. Altho a few good physicians may take a different view, the majority of phy sicians today are of the opinion that antiseptic gargles, nose and throat sprays, lozenges, mouth washes and the like are not worth while in the ; attempt to escape contracting any prevailing disease. j One ot the fundamental facts about germ disease which It seems impos sible to teach the wiseacre laity la that the germs must have Invaded the tissues before they can produce the disease. Any germs which may be free In the mouth, throat, nose, or other body cavity, and honce per haps accessible to antlseptlo agents, are necessarily of no consequence so far as the patient's present illness is concerned. What is the sense, then of using alleged antiseptics to destroy these free germs, when It Is Impos sible to get at the germs which are really causing the trouble? No antlseptlo as yet discovered can appreciably retard the growth and multiplication of germs in body tis sues without serloUBly damaging the tissues. Killing or disabling a few million germs in a test tube or even In a person's mouth, nose or throat. Is one thing. Stopping the activities of germs that have Invaded body tis sues is quite another thing. THEY RENOUNCE G.G. C. To the Editor: We the undersigned believe In good government. The routine uae ot an antiseptic gargle or nasal spray may help to protect within the patient's range from catching whatever Infection the patient has. The use of antiseptics In the dressing of Infected or septic wounds or bolls or other surgical in fections may help to protect those in close contact with the patient from contracting Beptlc Infection, sep ticemia, blood poisoning. DEED OF BANKS SHOCKS NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS , A High Price. It haa been well aatd that "The blood of the martyrs is .tfye seed of the church" and it may turn out that the blood of the slain Medford constable is the price to be paid for a return to sanity and normality In the life of Jackson county. It Is a high price to be paid, however, and a terrible thing that the end of the disturbances if this Is the end should come about in this way. Beyond the borders of ' Jackson county there are few persons better qualified to judge of the situation there than are the newspaper men of Oregon. This Is because it Is pet ty much, only the newspaper men who have had the opportunity of watching the development of the trouble In Medford as tt has been revealed In the two dally papers pub lished there. They have seen the trouble grow like a snow ball rolling down a long mountain side and al most without exception they have realized that all the discord and dls- sentlon have been fomented by the man Banks who shot Constable Prescott. Banks has ranted about "the gang" and the "Interests," promised to publish "revelations" that would shake the town and print the names of the "leaders" of the "crew" oppos ing him. Begged again and again for trje names and the revelations he has failed to give any and, instead gone off into new diatribes against the courts, the judges and all the other representatives of law and or der. He has been his own law, lived In an arsenal though no man's finger has been raised against him in vio lence and now has killed In what he calls defense of his home though there was no attack on his home. It's all such a pity. Out of it may peace come to a fine southern Ore gon community. Bend Bulletin. Earl Fehl Deplores Killing. Grimly ironical is the statement made to the United Press by pari H. Fehl in which he deplores "the wan ton killing of one of the best and modt honorable peace officers that Jackson county has ever had.' Doubtless Mr. Fehl does deplore Jimmie Deaf to Pleas For Return Says Wife MIAMI, Fla.. March 31. (AP) Weeping as she told of her efforts at a reconciliation with James J. Walker Mrs. Janet Allen Walker testified in her divorce suit today that the former New York mayor left her four years ago and had refused to return. Mrs. Walker testified emphatically that she was not seeking alimony. She said her husband has continued to contribute to her living expenses. He has never been anything but kind in that respect," she said. Mrs. Walker wept frequently as her attorney. A. Frank Katzentlne, ques tioned her about details of her mar ried life. She broke down momentarily when she told of her wedding on April 11. 1913, and again when questioned . about her separation In 1928. j "Have you ever made efforts a re- conciliation?" she was asked. "I certainly have." she replied, "but even this winter when I begged him to come down here, he refused." After she had concluded her brief testimony, two real estate dealers. Louts F. Snedlgax and J. J. Fretwell, Jr., testified they had known Mrs. Walker through real estate dealings with her, and that they had never seen Mr. Walker In her Miami homes. Canadian production of pig Iron in 1033 was about one-third of the 1931 total. ' - I that cold-blooded killing, and more so because if he analyzes the situation he must feel a moral responsibility for the tragedy which goes down as one of the darkest t-hadows on the pages of Jackson county history. Mr. Fehl was willing to be an as sociate of L. A. Banks when the killer was preaching a doctrine of hatred and distrust, making threats of revo lution and bloodshed. Mr. Fehl lent his personal support to the so-called Qoot Government Congress whlcn impotently fought to correct imagin ary wrongs. Mr. Fehl did not remain In the background, but he assumed a leadership in the congress meetings and he acted as one of their spokes men Furthermore, if we go back Into the history of foe agitation, we find that for years Fehl, through his publication, has laid the. foundation for the Banks propaganda. He was a familiar figure in Medford politics for 17? any years always critical of Medford city government. And like a cancerous growth wh:ch spreads with dlstattrous results, so spread his In fluence. The last year has been an Ideal time for Earl Fehl to spread his deadly propogandc Last May the Dally Tidings pleaded that he should be eliminated from the county po litical arena. The knowledge of his dangerous thinking was gained through his publication. It seemed impossible that he could be anything but costly experiment to Jackson county. And this he has been. He deplores .tne killing of George Prescott and yet he supported tho man who did the killing, after Banks had spoken or blooshed and revolution. It remains for a Jury to decide whether or not Mr. Fehl conspired to still the voice of the people through complicity in the ballot theft con spiracy. Every man Is innocent of such charges until he la proven guilty. But we do feel that a certain moral responsibility must be felt by Mr. rem for his part in the agitation which resulted In bloodshed a Ofhn.-im stain on the county which honored him by election to its high est office. To the Editor: Earl Fehl's expressions of regret at the cold-blooded murder of George Prescott, as published in the local newspapers, rings with true Fehllan Insincerity. ' . Had Earl Fehl nH aided L. A. Bana In his defiance of constituted law end order, had he not used the offlcj to which he was elected to as sist L. A. Mr. Fehl stood with Mr. Banar when he called our circuit courts thieves. Mr Fehl, you did not protest then; you did not tell Mr. Banks and the public that elected you to office, that hla defiance of law and order, that his pfouse of our circuit court, was absolutely foreign to your idea of law and order.
