Was It cold In the land of the Dakotas that winter's night? Oh, Uttle maybe 30 degrees below zero. Did the teamsters swing their arms and beat their handa. nib their faces and stamp their feet to keep from, freezing? Maybe. But their hearts were warm with exultation and achievement for their daring coup was a notable success. The ris ing sun which has looked down upon the dramas of the ages, aaw next morning a little courthouse, ready to open up for business Jn Gettysburg. It aw over In Forest City the awakening townspeople run the gamut of feeling from astounded consternation, through the righteous Indignation which fills . the heart when one Is beaten by unfair means, to futile wratlj and Impotent rngc. Can't you imagine you hear tha cries of "banditry," "travesty on Jus tice," "brigand miscarriage of our courthouse," "breakdown of law und order In Potter county?" Their wrath and rage proved to be both Impotent and futile for Get tysburg remains the county seat of Potter county to this day. CHRISTINE BEAVER HARK. Jacksonville, Oregon. March 7. 1933. .. Court House Moved on Bob Sleds Half Century Ago by South Dakotans To the Editor: ; There ?cjna to be a sentiment abroad in our midst that the local hullabaloo Is subsiding. The floods of vllliflcatlon are, receding and the befuddled populace may at last be given the facts concerning at least a part of the controversies. Per sonalty I give thanks that no one was murdered In the melee and that they didn't steal the new courthouse and set it up In some usurper's front yard. "Humph you say. "who ever heard of strnhng a courthouse?" Well. I did, or 1 wouldnt have mentioned it. It happened In Pot ter county. South Dakota In 1983. This Is the way I remember hear in n my father tell the tale. My father and mother were mar ried In 1880 ttnd went to Pnkota for hts health as he was. to all sp pearancea, dying otf tuberculosis; Tat railroad was Just being built across what Is now South Dakota. They went to the end of the railroad and thon went by ox-cart forty miles farther and took up land on the treeless prairie just across the Mis souri river from the Sioux Indian reservation. My mother b.irely miss ed being the first white woman In the county but other easterners soon came In to take advantage of the territory being opened up and brand new towns appeared as If by magic. Soon the need of organised local government was felt and the citizen ry was faced by the problem of es tablishing a county seat. As might be anticipated, strong rivalry sprang up between the villages, each little settlement feeling that If It only could have the coveted position U glorious future would be sAsured I Her was a oauee worth, tlgbttos for. a noble ambition that must be real ized at all costs. So the region was promptly plunged into Internal strife and turmoil. In the light of recent Jackson county history I feel Justi fied in leaving to your imagination the harrowing details of the ensu ing struggle When it was all over but the shouting a burg by the Incongruous name of Forest Cttv was found to be the new county seat and the embryo cities about her learned the taste of civic defeat. How proudly did Forest City watch the construction of her courthouse, a diminutive frame building. Lum ber was scarce and exceedingly high pneed. It was quite the thing in those days on that frontier to live in a sod house. So Forest City basked In her triumph unsuspicious of the dark plot, the dastardly, dia bolical plot that was being formu lated by "the gang" In a neighbor ing town called Gettysburg. In due time winter laid hold upon tlie land. All the expanse of prairie was one great while table land of snow. By and by, when the sledding was good, some of the best citizens of Gettysburg hitched their best horse to their best bob-sleds and drove to the county seat. Following carefully laid plans they arrived in ths sleeping town at the dead of night. Work in as silently, as awily, and u skillfully a p Following discovery of the robbery of the high school vault and removal of a small amount of money, E. H. Hedrlck, superintendent of schools, Is sued an order to all schools of the city, reminding them that none of the school safes are equipped for the safe keeping of money and that no money should be kept In the school buildings. The valut robbed Thursday night Is fire proof but not burglar proof. Small balances have been left in the vault occasionally in the past, but no more money, in any sum will be stored there In the future, is the su perintendent's order.
