Tha Times aald eome hope had been ; expressed that an "advisory" opinion i might be obtained from the supreme court, saving time and avoiding con ; troversles which might arise over the question whether congress may lay ; down a baalo representation rule for i the state constitutional conventlona, ! Fleet To See Plenty Of Gun-Play But No Firing SAN DIBOO. Oal. iT) Somewhere between Alaska and aouthern Cali fornia a victorious fleet of destroyers may land thin month, -with the "an nihilation of the United States navy battle force to Its credit. The annual winter problem of the navy this year la one In which the scouting force must attempt to gain a foothold somewhere along the American west shore while the bat tle force attempt to hold It off. Like An Athletic Contest. The scouting force la on Its way from Hawaii. There will be a con centration of the fleet In the San Pedro-San Diego area. The maneuvers are planned some what In the manner of an athletic contest with a goal set, but the man ner in which It Is to be attained Is Just as much a secret as the manner In which a football team Is to score Its touchdowns. The purpose of the problem la to test the entire force of the navy un der surprise conditions such as they would meet In war. No shot will be fired but the most intricate gunplay possible with mod ern equipment will be used from anti-aircraft to gunnery from the tur ret of huge warships. Men will work with clock-like precision, handling and placing shells and powder Just ae though they were actually In war. ' Turrets Like Cylinders. One of the most dramatic focal points of action will be in the battle ship gun turrets. There Is a steel cabin on the deck which shelters the gunning crew for a setup of two or three large guns, as the case may be. The breeches of the guns are also In the turret but they nose out Into the air, pointing sldewlse or up or down as the target demands. The turrets, five or six to the ship. are like steel cylinders that descend through two or three levels of the vessel down Into the 'handling" room where the ammunition is gotten out by swift, mechanical coordination of the men. placed on electrically oper ated trays and conveyed rapidly to the level of the gun crews, each In command of a turret manager. When the target Is too far to sight along the guns the crews receive their orders for pointing on an electrical dock operated from the gunnery of fice In a post on the mast. That same precision and teamwork will control the entire man-force of the navy aa the ships sight each other somewhere along the west coast. Submarines, aircraft carriers and ships will each go. through the high ly technical system of defense plan ned to keep Invading forces from United States shores. Those In command this year will include VJoe -Admiral Frank H. Clark with the scouting force and Admiral Claud O. Blooh with the battle force. SHERlFfTSALE SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 33. P) A crowd that stormed the county and city building here today with the avowed purpose of preventing a sher iff's sale, was met with streams from fire hose and tear gaa bombs, hurlod by deputy sheriffs. when tha orowd, after thronging tha courthouse stops, where the sale had been advertised for today, forced its way into the building, it wss first met with streams of water. When these proved Ineffective to stop Its rush, the members pushed toward the sheriff's office, the gaa bombs were brought into play. Condemnation of the ballot robbery and robbers continued strong today throughout the city and county. Citi zens and taxpayers were preparing to demand that the doors of the court house be kept locked at night, and that If the auditorium was used, it alone be opened; that keys be Issued only to Janitors and county officials, and that only those legally entitled to food and quarters on the roof of the courthouse be given these ac commodations. The county court Monday put W. P. Batty on duty ms a nlghtwatchman, with instructions to maintain a steady patrol. Public opinion has crystallized to a considerable extent since the bal lot stealing, that "It Is time to halt the turmoil and agitation." The pub lic Is demanding, In no uncertain terms that the "courthouse be made safe for the records," and that no expense or time be spared to find the guilty parties. "If they can get away with It now. they may try some thing else," was the leading argument. Broken windows glazed tj , rrow bridge Cabinet Works. Luckies Please! ll C ' ! The burning of the -bunk house down there Is another example of how, Banks distorts the truth," Clements said. "When the house burned down.' I called Banks on the telephone to tell him about It, and be aald be would put it in bis paper. I advised him not to do it untl we had In spected It to learn Just HOW It started. "A complete investigation of the fire showed conclusively that the fire started from a defective flue, Clem ents aald. and we had had trouble getting Insurance bocause of the de fective ' nue. There waa absolutely no evidence of any 'gang' or 'enemies' having burned the place down, but Banks announced in hla paper that the fire was the work of the 'gang' that was atlll trying to run Bates and Banka out of the country. "We told Banka that the fire was not the work of firebugs, and that we had PROVED It had started from the defective flue, but Banka did not correct hla story. He preferred to let his readers believe It was the work of the gang." Others Cite Untruths. The experience of Clements with Banks Is but one of DOZENS OF LIKE EXPERIENCES otners have had with him. When Banks deliberately distorted the truth about the dyna miting of the dam. and gave the im pression Clements said it was dyna mited when Clements said it WAS NOT dynamited, he expressed In full hla mania for truth distortion. When Banks refused to tell his readers the truth about the fire that destroyed the bunk house on the Black Channel property, he wilfully and maliciously misled hla readera for the sole purpose of further building up hla story of persecution of Bates by the officers and the Invisible "gang and to clear himself on 8300, 000 in libel suits. Others Seek Truth. These two concrete examples are but two among HUNDREDS OF LIKE THE MARKET IS STRONG ON KAHOTA OATS Prices Are Due To Advance IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR GOOD, PLUMP, CLEAN SEED YOU'LL FIND IT AT OUR STORE, Monarch Seed & Feed Co. Cor. 6th and Bartlett l&hu-y a3sm INSTANCES. Members of tha Good Government congress who have rush ed to Banka' support because they have read of "miscarriages of Justice" In the Medford Dally Mews are begin ning to look to the truth of many other charges FOB THEMSELVES. There is no doubt that these peo ple are seeking the truth about mat ters, it la pointed out. but It la also pointed out that they have read In Banks' paper that these dams were dynamited, that hla bunk house was burned by the "gang." and they have heard him declare from the public platform that Raleigh Mathews, Ted Smith and Albert Goetjen were KEPT OUT OF THE COUNTY BY INTIMI DATION and prevented from appear ing before the grand Jury In the Da hack matter, when the statements have been proved false. There Is considerable surprise, how ever, among thousands of persons in the valley, that honest taxpayers ana workers can aeek the leaderahlp of a man who haa no regard for the truth and whose disregard for the truth can be proved over and over again If they will but take the time to check up on the facts behind his alleged "conspiracies." Testified at Hearing. Further developmenta in the un covering of the truth In the Everett Dahack case gained from Interviews with members of two previous grand Juries that Investigated the shooting, bring out the fact that Ted Smith. Albert Goetgen and Raleigh Mathews all three testified AT THE FIRST AND SECOND GRAND JURY IN VESTIGATIONS and that conflicting testimony waa given. The three men testified at the flrat hearing that a fusillade of shots was fired, and at the second hearing that only two were fired. Banks, editor of the Medford Dally News, haa REPEATEDLY CON TENDED In his paper that the offi cers would not let the three men tes tify at thecoroner's Inquest, and had prevented them from x testifying at subsequent grand Jury hearings by keeping them out of the county on parole provisions. At he meeting of the Good Government congress Mon day night. ONLY TEN DAYS AGO, February 13, Banks told his hearers that "persons besides the law enforce ment officials" who were present at the Dahack killing were kept from the county and from testifying at the grand Jury hearings by the offi cers of the county, and that the men were afraid to return, .here under threat of arrest.
