Which only shows that humorists have their troubles these parlous times like everyone else, and while they may amuse some people they give others a pain in the neck. Such conditions are tough larly those who fail to. keep their sense of humor in good work ing order, for under the surface nearly everyone is sore at every one else. The great national People who can keep their heads in spite of the hullabaloo about tbem are needed now as never before. When the storm passes as sooner or later it is sure to pass they will at least have the satisfaction of coming under Kipling's classification of what it takes to make s "man." Those who think all dissension and strife is confined to Jackson county should look about them a bit. Down here in California, they have started a recall against the smiling and debonair Governor Eolph. As yet no definite or serious charges have been brought against him. The complaint seems to be they just don't like "Jimmy" don't think he is much of a governor,-want to kick him in the sest of the pants, and put someone else in his place. We don't think Jimmy Rolph IS much of a governor, par ticularly for such critical times as thoso prevailing now. He is a sort of good weather "greeter" excellently fitted for presiding as chief executive when life is going by like a song, but not so well fitted, when life Is going by like a combination between a Kilkenny Fair, and the battle on the Marne. 'But the people of California of course should have thought of that before they went to the polls and voted for him. Unless he has been guilty of malfeasance or misfeasance in office, some serious dereliction of duty his recall is not justified, and according to the newspaper men it will not carry. But it will cost the taxpayers money, and throw a monkey wrench into the machine of progress and reconstruction, while it lasts. The XT. S. senate' U also a victim of the common malady. In normal times the members of that disgruntled body would never have so lost their sense of humor, as to kick out a sergeimt-nt-arms, because he dared 'claim in a written, article that some members of the Upper House are demagogues, intent upon doing and saying what will bring them votes, instead of what they know to be for the bost interests of their country. ' It was that charge and not the charge that only a few senators sold their votes, that brought Barry's dismissal. Great Pete I Every school boy knows the former statement is true. Certainly for at least three months bofore the eleotion, the members of the senate did nothing but play politics and ohenp politics at that. Since then they have been doing nothing but beat time, and make it impossible for President Hoover to do anything constructive not even allowing him to make routine appointments. There are some very good senators, of course Oregon has one but at least 30 percent of the membership is made up of men who don't care a hoot about what happens to the oountry as long as they can please the folks baok home and thus hold their job. The present writor met Barry about ten years ago, during the naval reduction conference in Washington, D. 0. He. is a first rate newspaper man with a very pleasing personality. Bather short-sighted of the senate. Recently some medical ml salon arlea published a report of their observa tions on the preservation ox the teeth or the people in the o o m m unity they served in Asia. The con clusion they drew from their expe rlence Is that diet that Includes plenty of fresh eggs, fresh raw ml lk, cheese, some fresh vege tables and fruits, together with a mode of life that exposes the naked akin to direct sun light, Insures good sound teeth, better teeth by far than our funny Yankee notion about tooth brushing and all that nonsense has ever given the peo ple of this country. Although the teeth of these Chinese are usually In what most Americans would call foul condition, so that the examiner haa to scrape away debris In order to get down to the tooth, neverthe less they 'do not suiter from decay, carles, cavities. At the same time cdmea a report from Hawaii, which Indicates that abundance of sunshine, cod liver oil and other factors which we believe essential to make good teeth do not prevent rampant disintegration of the teeth of babies In Hawaii. The teetn of babies there, both native and white, are usually soft and chalky and are crumbling or disintegrating when first cut. Doctors Martha Jones, Nils Larsen and Oeorge Pit chard (of philosophy, medicine and dental surgery respec tively) have been Investigating this striking prevalence of tooth decay in Honolulu for several years and their studies ehow tljat, contrary to an old belief of dentists, the decay of the teeth Is well advanced before the in fant cuta them. Formerly there was a die turn, that unerupted teeth can not decay. This theory or tne im munity of the tooth crypt to decay prior to eruption was part of the smug notion, still fatuoualy cherish ed by many dentists, that a "clean tooth never decays." You see, as long as the tooth Is covered by the gum tissues, neither the "acid" saliva nor germs nor decomposing of food par ticles can reach It to begin their deadly work. But this quaint theory of tooth decay Is discarded now, by all but the old timers who still coast i along on what they learned when they were young and what they glean In support thereof from the "lltera- IRE GIRLS SEEK The home economics department of tho local schools under the sup ervision of Miss Maurlne Carroll is striving at this time to meet the needs of all the girls Interested in the different fields of home making.
