shows that humorists have their troubles these parlous times
like everyone else, and while they may amuse some people they
give others a pain in the neck.
Such conditions are tough

People who can keep their heads in spite of the hullabaloo about
tbem are needed now as never before. When the storm passes
as sooner or later it is sure to pass they will at least have the
satisfaction of coming under Kipling's classification of what it
takes to make s "man."
Those who think all dissension and strife is confined to
Jackson county should look about them a bit. Down here in
California, they have started a recall against the smiling and
debonair Governor Eolph. As yet no definite or serious charges
have been brought against him. The complaint seems to be
they just don't like "Jimmy" don't think he is much of a
governor,-want to kick him in the sest of the pants, and put
someone else in his place.
We don't think Jimmy Rolph IS much of a governor, par
ticularly for such critical times as thoso prevailing now. He
is a sort of good weather "greeter" excellently fitted for
presiding as chief executive when life is going by like a song,
but not so well fitted, when life Is going by like a combination
between a Kilkenny Fair, and the battle on the Marne.
'But the people of California of course should have thought
of that before they went to the polls and voted for him. Unless
he has been guilty of malfeasance or misfeasance in office,
some serious dereliction of duty his recall is not justified, and
according to the newspaper men it will not carry. But it will
cost the taxpayers money, and throw a monkey wrench into
the machine of progress and reconstruction, while it lasts.
The XT. S. senate' U also a victim of the common malady. In
normal times the members of that disgruntled body would never
have so lost their sense of humor, as to kick out a sergeimt-nt-arms,
because he dared 'claim in a written, article that some
members of the Upper House are demagogues, intent upon
doing and saying what will bring them votes, instead of what
they know to be for the bost interests of their country. '
It was that charge and not the charge that only a few
senators sold their votes, that brought Barry's dismissal. Great
Pete I Every school boy knows the former statement is true.
Certainly for at least three months bofore the eleotion, the
