LEGION DANCE 10 JOHN G. NORTON, COUNTY PIONEER, MENTIONED FOR POSTS IN ROOSEVELT CABINET DIES IN DALLAS John G. Norton, one of the most widely known pioneers of Jackson county, passed away at the home of his son, Fred Norton, at Dallas, Ore., December 28 at the age of 86 years. air. Norton was born at Windsor. Ohio, in !bi6. At the ace of 4 he moved with his parent to Burling ton, Iowa, and later to Mt. Pleas ant, Iowa. In the year 1860 the fam ily Joined a caravan for Oregon, a six months' Journey with 45 wagons. They came by way of Salt Lake City, arriving mere on July 4, two hours late to witness the parade of Brtgham Young with his 80 wives. Upon arriving in Rogue River val ley, his father purchased 300 acres where Medford now stands for the sum of $900. In 1886, Mr. Norton was married to Anne Dews, who later passed to her reward. He was later marriet; to Sarah E. Sargent, who also passed away, In 1023. For many years John Norton teamed over the perilous roads from Jacksonville to Crescent City, Cal. Mr. Norton resided for more than 50 years In this county and will be fa vorably remembered by many of the ploiv.era now living. He leaves three children surviving: Dora Chliders. Goodrich, Idaho; How ard Norton of Burbank, Cal., and Fred of Dallas, Ore. The body will arrive In Medford Friday and funeral services will be held at the Conger chapel at 2 p. m. Wilson, in a decision handed down In city court yesterday afternoon by Judge Glenn O. Taylor. Pipes filed suit November 16 against the mayor for 115 due on back rent. Pipes claimed In his complaint that Wilson had only paid $20 a month during July, August and September, when $25 was the regular amount ot rent to be paid. Mr. Wilson, at that time, maintained offices In the fourth floor of the Liberty building. Wilson told the Judge, according to the records, that he had served notice on Pipes that he would only pay $20 thereafter, or move out. When the Janitor collected the rent each month, according to Wilson, he accepted the $20 given him by Wilson. Judge Taylor ruled that as long m no agreement In the matter had been reached between Pipes and Wilson, that the $15 was due Pipes for back rent. Mayor Wilson now has his office in the new city hall at the corner of Fifth and Central streets. tn the opinion of some of those close to Presidentelect Roosevelt two cabinet posts were being defin itely allocated, the treasury portfolio to Senator Glass of Virginia and the postmaster generalship to James A. (Associated Press Photos) ADVENTURER HELD FOR LONG BEACH YACHT MURDER Butte Falls A dancing party, which will benefit many little children in Medford by aiding them in a happier and neaitn- ier future, Is the plan of the Medford post, American Legion, for Monday night, January 2. The post will entertain with benefi ; dance at Oriental Gardens and the proceeds will go to the Med ford City Schools Kitchen Fund to provide milk and hot soup for the needy children. Dancing will continue until 1 o'clock with good music and many features are promised. Guests are ex pected from all sections of the valley to enjoy a festive reception of the New Year and to aid a very worthy cause. (AP) Fol lowing the announcement yesterday that the Chicago & Northwestern railroad would purchase between 3 and 4 million feet of fir timber here for early January delivery, word was confirmed here today that the Chesa peake & Ohio line, for the first time in history, will enter the Oregon lum ber market. The O. it O. has placed an Initial order for 800,000 feet of lumber with a Columbia river mill. The first order will be chiefly for etrlngers and tim bers for bridge and other heavy con struction.
